Grouper opener success (pic)

Took the day off to jump on the Grouper opening day. Felt like the open of hunting season. Might become an annual event.
Anyway all the prep planning and practice paid off. arrived at my first spot at 0800 110ft and had a three man limit of nice scamps before 0930.All caught on Jigs never put any bait in the water and had black sea bass 3-4 for every grouper bite. fought off the ambejacks keeping one for a friend. My brother son and I had three grouper on at one time argueing boat side who’s was bigger and needed 1st attention with the gaff.
Hilarious. All the better as my son is leaving for the Army this weekend and trips with him from here on may be far and few between.
spent the rest of the day trolling plastics as i brought no Ballyhoo or rigs thinking we would be spending the day getting grouper, figures.Lost a tuna boat side while i was messing with a teaser. Lost a nice bull Mahi to an arial show . Landed a few small mahi and called it a day, with a smile

Nice! You’ve got catching scamps down pat!

Good catch, spent the weekend fishing and diving with my so who just returned from a 9mo deployment! We are proud of your son, the 1%!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Great catch and even better story. That is what it is all about!

Kayak, SCUBA, or both.

Thanks guys for the fish congrats, i’ve never been very good at catching any kind of grouper. But put it on my priority list this winter to succeed. Learned everything here tech tips etc… minus locations had to figure them out on my own.
My son has enlisted in the 18x program , that is the Special Forces pipeline. So didn’t pick an easy route. I was a Green Beret for 24yrs so i guess he really is following in my footsteps. Won’t be easy and i wish him the best of luck and am very proud of him for even trying.
i’ll be watching his progress as if i was doing it all over again myself. Service to country is extremely honorable , to test yourself against the best and brightest americans in one of the best military units we have is patriotic and even bit crazy. God Bless out troups.
We will be fishing together on fri in the meatfish slam out of GT. Maybe he is geting a little nervous about leaving but he really wanted to fish one more time, who am i to refuse.so wish us luck.

Excellent Rick. I’m sure you prepared him well, and was wondering how you would explain the feeling of nervous jealousy. They have some pretty trick gear these days. My riflesmith has been doing alot of work for the boys at Bragg, I sweep the floor in his shop just to fondle them. Do they send the 18X’s to Benning for basic with the grunts?

Oh, and good luck today and to you son.
