Sorry, not much to report. We ran to the GT Hole on Friday and stopped on a temp break about a mile short of the hole just before sunrise. We trolled north, south, east and west of the hole, but the majority of the bites came in the 150 to 200’ range. We never found any wahoos, but we did end up with some unusual catches:
1 blackfin;
1000 little tunny;
1 for 3 on frigate birds (I think it was a frigate, but not 100% sure); and
1 for 1 on porpoise…a first for me and my crew
Before any PETA sponsors get upset, the frigate and porpoise were all tagged and released.
Running back in we came across 3 right whales…pretty cool!
Despite the lack of meat fish, it was nice to be on the water with friends and cold beverages!
A blue and white islander snagged him. Fortunately most of his jumps were towards the boat, so not too much line was pulled off. I have always had porpoises swim up to the boat, but this was the first time I have ever seen them batting around the skirts like toys. All the porpoises vanished after the one shook the hook off.
are you really sure what happened?You mentioned the creature “spit the hook” then say it was “snagged”.How many cold beverages had you consumed when you witnessed the “incident”?
i wouldn’t believe the dolphin hookup if i hadn’t seen it first hand…it happened when they were playing in the wake, i don’t think he was actually trying to eat the bait. it spooled a penn 50w in ten seconds and melted the drag
They definitely weren’t trying to eat the bait, they were just playing. My previous posts…spit the hook, tag and release…were poor attempts at humor. They were clearly playing w/ the baits, not trying to eat’em…one either got snagged by the hook or maybe the leader got wrapped, I don’t know??? All I know is that a porpoise was attached to the line and we thankfully/luckily did not get spooled.
Pat…this is your cousin Anthony. We need to go fishing soon.
