Pushed through the jetties around 4:45am and had lines in by 7:30am. Beautiful ride out. First wahoo hit the deck around 8am and it was constant action until around 11. The wahoo were demoralizing. Had two different fish give us the head shake a foot out of gaff range before flipping us the middle finger and swimming off. One more screaming cut-off and then another fish that peeled about 200yds of line before spitting the hook. Lines were tight the entire time. Maybe the hooks were too sharp… The same two rods stayed busy all day.
Orange/Black Ilander with 140lb single strand and fluoro (Wahoo, Hammerhead)
Blue/White Ilander with 80lb fluoro(False Albies, Wahoo)
Water: 64-66 on the ledge. Heard tale of 74 degree water a little further out and south
All in all a really nice day at the hole minus the 40,000 other boats zigzagging across the same marks. Thankfully we were able to find some good water away from the crowd and pull a few fish before the wolves moved back in.
As the wunderground wind-map predicted, the fan turned on around 1:30pm and we called it a day and headed back to the hill.
My 19 yr old cousin from Ohio, who had only SEEN the ocean once before, managed a nice wahoo and hammerhead for his first two saltwater fish ever. When I invted him to run offshore with us he was hesitant at first because he hadn’t brought his fishing rod with him and he felt bad asking if he could borrow one of ours. We all got a good laugh out of that one. Hopefully he’ll have some good stories to tell back home.
I think that covers everything, if not, PM me.
Yall have a great Easter!
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t
What a story he will have to tell! Nice fish and Huge shark too!
We took Donnie’s brother and a friend of his out with us summer before last to catch some spade fish. His brothers friend shows up with one of those rods with a little bullet reel on it… We politely told him he could leave it and just use some of ours…but he said"oh… I’ll just take this one and it will be fine…but thanks" we tried to not smile knowing what was in store for him…and for us ;). When we got on the fish he hooked up with a huge one…that little rod bent in half and the line was feeding out so fast…no joke…that the top part of the reel blew off ;). …right before the rod snapped. We all couldn’t help but laugh…he being the one to laugh the hardest before saying…ahmmm…guess I should have used one of yours ;). We still tease him abut that. What a day we had!
One of the best things about fishing isn’t just the fish we catch…but the memories that are made.
I’ll bet he’s glad he left his fishing rod home now! Nice catch, I called our trip cause I thought the water was too cold shows what I know.

There is a great article in Marlin Magazine this past month about wahoo and what little is known about them (feeding habits, migration patterns, etc). Very interesting/informative read if you get a chance to pick it up.

Jeeez…the Hole is crowded in March…WTF…???..Guess with Turkey season opening tomorrow it may thin out. Bring on the warm weather so we csn hit the Scarp and Mcdoogal.
Try to avoid grabbing the leader with the wahoo boatside. Changing the slightest angle on them when you have them at the boat seems to let the hook fall right out. There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing the 60#'ers drift away, JUSST out of gaff range.

I take it this is from experience?

It is much more cost effective to bring back alot of meat every time than to loose big fish at the boat- I have paid alot to play but 9 of 10 trips on my boat the cost ratio is very good- its all relative i guess
