Had my college buddies in town for the holiday and headed out to the Georgetown Hole. Ride out was a little sporty; could only make about 25 knots… lots of big rollers with little chop on top. Stopped to let one of my buddies sight cast to a school of little tunny with a spinning rod and picked one up on a green bucktail… could’ve had all the mako bait we wanted.
Dropped the two Black Barts in about 7 miles shy of the Hole and pulled them at 14 knots while we rigged baits, and actually got our first fish one one of them. No ‘hoo, though… just an apparently very hungry dolphin. Put out the rest of the spread in 160’, and picked up three dolphin within about a half-hour. Saw a nice blue free-jumping and chased after him, but no luck.
We spent most of the day out off the ledge trying to find Charlie, but only got one small blackfin to show for it. Got a doubleheader of dolphin in 600’, and then decided to troll back in try and find a wahoo and some more dolphin. We got back on them in 160’ again, and put four more in the box. Lesson learned: don’t leave fish to find fish.
Ended up with nine dolphin (all 8-15 range,) one blackfin and one king mackeral (which Bob insisted on keeping.) The ride in was great, and we got back to the dock about 5:00. Overall a pretty ■■■■ nice day. Will post pics when I get 'em.
