GTH 8/24

Let me start this by telling a story and asking for some advice. 8/17 we went out and caught 2 wahoo but got cut off 9 times. I was running about 12 inches of wire to 80lb fluorocarbon. Lost all islanders I owned and went home livid. Determined not to let this happen again I increased wire to about 4 ft. I pretty sure this was my down fall.

We left the dock at 3:30 from MI determined to have lines in the water by sunrise. Had two first timers on the boat who I really wanted to show a good time. We went out a little too late on Sunday night and didn’t make it to bed before we left so I claimed my bean bag to get a quick nap in before it was go time.

We had lines in the water by 6:30 and we off. It was be far the calmest day I had ever been out on the water.

I knew the wire was too much but couldn’t get last Monday out of my head. Didn’t see any bait or rips anywhere. Finally at about 8 we went over some live bottom and had a small Hoo hit a plug about 8 ft behind the boat. Rookie stepped up and made quick work of a 20lber.

About 30 minutes later I decided to quick being semi-harder headed and cut the wire down to about 2 ft. I battled all day to cut it to 8 inches or so but never did. At about 10 we had the long rigger scream, then go dead. I was pissed we lost a big one. So I get on it and just real as hard as I could out of frustration. Out of no where it screams again dumping about 300 yards on line. I knew we had a good one for sure now. Put the second rookie on the rod and to his credit he reeled harder that anyone I had ever seen. About 45 minutes later the fight was over. Victory was ours.

We use about 3 feet of 90 lb solid strand wire with haywire twist on both ends.

Amazing ocean right there. Good catching. A two hoo day is a good day.

Really expected better out of you. Its probably best if you just hang up the cleats and get back to golfing…

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

I would but I have grown to expect not to catch much going with you. So now I go just for the ride. I truly don’t even care to touch the reels. I just want to ride and get rigs ready for everyone else. I have a blast every time. Fish or no fish. This is only my 5th or 6th time going and being the person that makes all the decisions and rigs all the bait. I’m learning loads every time. I’ll never quit.
