What is the random “fin” on the mako’s head? It looks like boney spines coming out of the base of the skull, but I’m pretty sure it’s an illusion in the photograph. Can’t figure out what it is.
Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.

Hah I can see what you are talking about. It was 2x the girth before we gutted it at sea and stuffed it with ice. It looked like a pumped up balloon and the gill flaps were taunt. After we cleaned out the inside bits it basically deflated since it doesn’t have any rib bones and the gills got supper loose and you were seeing them bunched up under the head after we hauled it up onto the truck bed.

DO NOT BOIL THE JAWS!!! they will fall apart. scrape all the meat off the jaws and let them dry naturally. I use a razor blade and take them right down to the cartilage.

Hook location on that mako was perfect! anywhere else and those teeth may have cut you off. Great catch guys

Yeah it took a ton of luck to catch it on a floro leader and small tuna rig. One thing I did was I kept it on the starboard side of the boat during the whole fight which luckily kept the line from raking across the whole set of teeth. We ended up doing lots of big circles during the fight and the leader came in clean and unscathed. During the initial hit the shark did get airborne but it was so far back we couldn’t ID it and thought it was a wahoo since I’ve seen them do the same.

Yeah it was Shem Creek Marina. I moved to Seabreeze marina now since it’s closer to my place downtown and Shem Creek kept raising the rates.
