I’ve been really itching to get out and fish deep so I left the dock and met up with or buddy sporty and let them lead the way and knock down the seas. It was a very rough ride out in the pitch black but at least we were nearing the GTH by first light. Only ran out at about 20kts the whole way.
Very slow the first part of the day trolling a full spread of everything from tuna feather and islanders to heavy planers with big wahoo rigs. After a trash fish slam of a bonito, amberjack, and barracuda, we decided to move around a bit and try to find some better water so we setup the high speed troll for at about 12kts for an hour until we found some better looking water.
We put our full spread back out and trolled around until we got our first wahoo hooked up and in the boat. Looks like a solid mid 30’s fish but we didn’t get a good weight measurement because of what happened next. Another line with a light tuna feather and a floro leader starts screaming off of the Penn 30 International as we trolled over the same bait ball. We started clearing lines and prepping for a big battle since this fish quickly dumped the spool nearly all the way. We chased it for a good ways and then started circling it for about an hour an it made about 5 huge runs, once each time we thought we had it beat and near the boat.
Finally we got it close to the boat and realized we had a nice shortfin mako and that we had to get a plan together with a short crew of 3 and just one gaff. We quickly rigged a tail rope and went over out plans. After measuring it we then subdued it beside the boat we tried pulling it into the tuna door but the dive ladder kept snagging the fish. We ended up all pulling on the one gaff to bring it over the gunnel; then we ran but fortunately it was mostly gone by then.
Fish bled, gutted, and packed with ice inside and out and we were back to fishing but the bite was gone and we were out of time.
Back to home at 40mph on a flat ocean and we were in the jetties by 4.
I planned for this t

Nice catch and report!
What do you do with the jaws?
I tried putting one on an anthill to clean it once. I think a dog or raccoon ran off with it, because it was gone when I checked on it a few days later.

Looks like that Mako was a daymaker! Tight work gents
My advice is my opinion only. I may have gotten that opinion from something I read while sitting on the toilet. Please keep that in mind when reading my posts, the information may not be correct.
What water temp did you see at the Hole?

Jordan, is that your truck in the posted photo? That truck is always two doors down from my house in PC. Just curious… If you ever need an extra deckhand, let me know…
