Man we just could not catch a break. My 1st trip offshore in my “new to me” 21’ Sea Boss and still no solid hookups. I heard tale of the bite going OFF at the hole, so me and my boys packed up and went. Left out early on Sat. - only to be greeted by a dozen or so boats already in our spot. No need to worry - its a big place so we set our spread for a little high speed trolling.
In just a few minutes on trolling and scanning the surface and what do you know -TUNA busting just off in the distance. So I turned the Mothership towards those suckers and before our baits could cross where they had been- they were GONE!!!
We did stay at the hole for most of the day until these A$$hats kept yelling on the radio about running over something. We stopped and looked and sure enough we had a boatload of line tangled on our motor. It took a while to get the mess straightened out, but we were able to salvage enough to spool 2 of my new Pfluegers.
Although we were not able to bring any fresh Mahi or Ahi to the little lady - the day was not a total loss thanks to a couple of tangles. Final count for the day:
3 Blue & White Islanders
2 Cedar Plugs
Enough Mono last for the rest of the year
And I was able to salvage 3 packs of ballyhoo for the next trip.

Yes, fishing the GTH is rather sporty. You just about have to spend the night out there to claim a spot. Most people fishing at the GTH fish w.t.h.b. you have to be careful fishing round one another, if not your prop on your outboard will look like a Christmas tree full of ornaments and a squirrel nest. Why fish in another boats wake when you got plenty of ocean out there to fish in?
unbelievable…
thats right i said it, why dont ya’ll educate these guys that would be another good use for this site. i only report, if ya’ll want to fish out there you have to have common sense and be considerate at the same time play defense. if some hot head sportfish captain cuts in front of you b/c your in a cc boat suck it up and tac away the tonnage factor always is in effect.
