Guide question

Will any guides locally go out on my boat with me or is that something they are not allowed to do by the coast guard or DNR? I would love to take a guided trip, but I don’t have the funds in the budget and was hoping maybe that would be a way to save some money (if it would save any).

Maybe some of you captains could weigh in on the subject.

Glad you posted. I have been wondering the same thing for a while!

They will go out with you on your boat - you just have to pay for their time. They can take out just about any boat as long as all the safety equipment is in place and the boat isn’t rated for more than 6 paying people & 6 people or less are on board.

Yes it would cost less, and you would save money in the long run by moving up on the learning curve…

Yes, guides can go in your boat. Some guides offer that as a service of their business of teaching you how to dock, drive, launch, your boat etc.

I priced it both ways out of M.I. and that particular guide didn’t offer a great discount (it was still high) from what I remember it was about a $75.00 to $100.00 differance and he prefered to use his own boat. this was to be a near shore / inshore trip.

Thanks for the replies, especially Saltfisher. I don’t need any help with running my boat, but catching fish consistently is something I’m not all that good at yet. Anybody have any references for a guide out of Edisto that may be willing to go with me?

RADADDY on here. I’m honestly nit sure if he guides anymore or not, but he’s a hardcore fisherman, look him up here

Thanks for the recommendation, Yakman. Tigerfin, I do guide around the Edisto area and can help you with whatever you are looking for out of the South or North Edisto. It’s not my full time occupation, but I enjoy being able to shorten learning curves for people who are passionate about inshore fishing. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

I guided inshore for 13 years. Raddaddy is as good as they get and well worth his fee to shortening the learning curve he referred to.
I have never liked, and would not take a client’s boat on a charter. There are liability reasons, equipment (lack of) reasons, etc. Just the fact I’ve got everything on my GPS is reason enough. Not a good idea at all for captain and client. Bob

I agree with Bob. I’ve done it and don’t like it. I don’t mind using your boat for teaching docking, or boat handling, but for fishing I want my boat, my stuff, my safety gear, my radio and my GPS.

Inshore fishing you won’t save much money anyway, as the fuel and overhead are are a small part of the cost. The guide’s time is the largest component of the expense.
