Gulf Fishing - Updated with Pics

The family and I fished yesterday with an old friend and his wife down here in the Weeki Wachee, FL area. It was very hot and with no breeze, the gulf looked like a parking lot. We went out around 40 miles (and it was still only around 70’ deep) looking for Red Snapper. With no current to speak of, it was a challenging day. We caught a lot of undersized Grouper, lots and lots of Grunts, a Remora, and we hooked up with a couple of sharks. Even caught a huge Trigger but alas, they are off limits in the gulf. It hurt to throw that one back as I love Trigger. My oldest had a small grouper on the line offering a little resistance when something hit that felt like a freight train. He fought it for 10 minutes or so and then suddenly the line went slack. He saw just enough down in the water and looking at the little battered Grouper he pulled up, it appears he had a good size Goliath on the line. The poor little Grouper did not fare well.

We ended the day with 5 very nice Red Snapper as we were forced in by an approaching storm. For some inshore folks, it was a fun day. Hoping to get some inshore fishing in but, it is different here so we’re still working on that.

By the way, the scalloping down here is great. If you’ve never done it, you should check it out.

Thanks for the report and for checking in. Hope yall have fun.

Send me the pictures!!!

Gulf is great, but can be humbling at times with the lack of structure and the private reefs.

Glad ya’ll having a great time, the gulf is a totely differant from the Atlantic. Love it off Alabama with all the gas wells!

All they talk about is the rigs, but the best bottom fishing I have ever experienced. …bar none…Crazy good was 11 miles off of Venice on a rock pile.

And btw…I have fished a pile of rigs.

Nah, Ricky wouldn’t do that. I’ll make Connor figure out how to post pics.

Thank Conner for the pics. Looks fun

Y’all, Pasty White Folks, need to get out in the sun more often!:sunglasses:

Doug, we have to work on your “push” poses. Those pictures represent the ACTUAL size of the fish you caught. I’ll show you. You can thank Fritz for first pioneering the push picture back in 1964.

You’re right 23! Rick, seems to have a better handle on the push, so maybe Doug can practice up before his trip is over. Glad those were eating fish and not photo fish! If they were photo fish, the proper hold wasn’t being used and you know the trouble that causes on CFC!

Yeah, we’re all pretty much pasty English types. It kills my kids that they can’t get that nice brown look but it just isn’t in our genes. As for me, I started covering up more after my Dad had his nose carved on several times a few years back. That got my attention. We’ll work on our poses for our next trip.

As for the pics, I actually figured that one out myself.

What’s your wife’s boxwine count for the trip?

Only one box. We found a local beer down here she likes.

Thanks. How about some more pictures when you get up from your afternoon nap?
