Gulf Flies

Headed down to Orange Beach, AL area and been spending a little quality time at the vise to fill up a few boxes. Any suggestions besides the norm(clousers, etc…)on flies for the area?

Thanks.

gulf flies that ive seen were big and ugly for reds. lots of coppers and pink flashes on an overall brown body. kinda like an alaskan popsicle fly. I was down there for the spill last yr for 4 months and the trout and cobia fishing was fairly consistant. didnt get into any reds (fishing from work boats! ha)

I fished down in Louisiana two autumns ago. Was told the hot color for flies was Black over Chartreuse. Never got any fish on that color clouser, I was on a DIY trip and got skunked, a hard core cold front blew through the night I got there and put everything down.

I’ve seen some awesome videos on fishing for reds down in the gulf. Here’s one of them, with several shots of flies the Capt. is using.

Saw another video somewhere along the way, (on this board i think) and they were getting reds on Gurglers that looked like this (my version)

The Gurgler definitely works on bucketmouths up here in VA

Storms made it hit or miss, but the trout fishing down there is incredible. Not just numbers, but size as well(majority over 20")

Florabama until dinner, coolers packed, and the boat dropped off the lift. 50 plus fish nights(trout) per night(only fished 4 lights).

Mostly used a 7# as well as a 6# for a little fun. Lost a few flies to some “shadows” that we did not turn.

Chart/white & black/grey clousers were the ticket. Burned thru a lot of flies and started using striper flies b/c I ran out.

Handful of reds, but as I said…weather

Great trip!

Few weaks throwm the mix you are correct. The mullet were safe this trip. The Florabama is an engineering marvel…it’s amazing what you can do with a 18 wheeler load of plywood
