Gulp Shrimp In the Red

When I fillet Reds, I usally check their stomach to see what they have been eating. Lately they have been mostly empty. Yesterday I noticed one reds stomach was really big and hard. I figured it was a fresh mullet but to my surprise it was a gulp shrimp. I was wondering if anyone out there knows much about this. Could the red pass this big thing? Would he have eventually died? Wonder how often this happens? Just asking.

If that’s all I have to worry about…there’s nothing to worry about.

I’m pretty sure it would pass OK, they eat crabs and snails and worse. I think the gulp baits are made of some kind of soybean product, like tofu.

I caught a 30+" red couple of years ago and noticed something hanging out of the end of his digestive tract. It was a small round headed jig with no grub on it. He seemed OK. I removed it, took a couple of pics and let him go.

that’s funny. i have cleaned two different reds the past few years with a “new penny” gulp in their guts. i always used the natural or molting and they never came off the hook.
