Has anyone used the saltwater shrimp and if so which one I never knew there was so many?
I’ve some success on the New Penny and Pearl colors on a 1/4 oz. jig head.

Thanks, as much as it costs you try not to buy a dud color to start.
My goto when not using live bait is a white 3" Gulp shrimp on a 1/4 oz. jighead. Reel it very slowly so that it bumps the bottom. Great for trout, reds, flounder, etc. White gulp also works under a cork.

I agree, if I could only pick one color it would be white. But every day is different and it’s good to have more than 1. New Penny and Natural are my next 2 choices. Then Electric Chicken.

I have had some success with the white/chartruse shrimp. I bought some of the new penny color but have had no luck on those.
2nd that on electric chicken. I forgot that one. I use that color on regular curly tail grubs with good success also.

Spec,
Are you doin’ any twitchin’ (meaning giving the bait additional action) when you’re fishing jig heads, or are you just literally, slowly dragging the bait along the bottom? Also, do you rig the shrimp so the head is up (against the top of the jig head) or the tail is up? Thanks in advance.

Disclaimer: I am really not a great fisherman. I am usually outfished by those on the boat with me.
So here is the little I know: I vary my retrieve until I figure out what works best, or I watch what others are doing who are catching fish. In winter, I just use a dead slow steady retrieve with an occasional twitch. By dead slow, I mean one revolution of the reel handle takes maybe 4 seconds.
In summer, I would reel just slow enough to feel contact with the bottom with frequent twitches. I like fishing out from and just above or below a creek mouth at the ledge/dropoff for trout on mid-tides. So, slowly drag bottom in winter, barely bump bottom in warm weather is my best answer.
I am unsure of what you mean by heads up vs. tails up. I sometimes thread the gulp on the jig hook so the head is against the lead of the jig and the hook is exposed above the top of the gulp. If that is not working, I run the hook sideways through the head and let the body “dangle”.
The “dangle” presentation is what I usually use on a circle hook under a cork for trout. I use a light leader, with a splitshot half way down, on a slipcork rig for trout. The cork is a popping cork with the concave “top”, and I set my bait about chest deep or whatever depth will make it hover just over the bottom/oysters, etc. I use a smaller circle hook or a Khale hook for trout. Trout are known to perfer live bait, live shrimp in particular. I use the Gulp or a paddletail when live bait is not available. Trout don’t usually bite dead “real” bait.
For reds, I learned from some of my fishing buddies to use a rattlecork with an extremely short, maybe 8" or so, 20# mono leader with a couple of split shot 1/2 way and a large circle hook. Use 30# braid on the reel. This rig works well for live bait, market shrimp, chunks of mullet, or the gulp. I would “dangle hook” the gulp on this rig too. For reds, throw the cork into 6" of water when the water is barely in the grass. Or, throw the cork into the same 6" depth, or as shallow as you can get i

Depending on the jighead you’re using, you can’t go “tail up” (tail against jighead) because the keepers on the jighead will tear the bait. Especially is your jighead has aggressive keepers like DOA jigheads.
I understand not wanting to spend money on baits you may never use but conditions are always changing. Having only one or two colors could very well limit your effectiveness. I prefer the skittles method. Have every color in the rainbow and you’ll always have the “right color.” I’d rather have it and not need it as opposed to need it and not have it.

The price of the bait is probably one of the least expensive parts of the cost of my trips. No need to “hunt” without “ammo”.

I actually used some the other week, I got both new penny and white, I got a few bites, had two bit in half, I was using 1/8 oz jigheads and with this one pictured (which i still had in my tackle box) I was jigging on the bottom and something bit off part of the tail, another guy came along and told me I wouldn’t catch anything with 'em and that I should wait til winter to use artificial bait, so I tried other stuff that day.
I put Gulp in a different category from a true plastic bait. The scent makes fish treat it more like a “real” bait. But, a live shrimp will usually outfish anything inshore.
I like the Gulp when pinfish, etc. are around, because you don’t have to rebait as often. If the bite is hot, the Gulp will often “survive” several catches and you can catch more fish while the live shrimp fisherman is losing time rebaiting after every “bite”. If the bite is slow, go with live shrimp for sure.

No sweat. Like I’ve said, HPT has gotten more than their share of my money in the past. They’re just getting a little less now. In the end, as long as we’re supporting fishing and our favorite local shops here in SC, that’s all that really matters.

Well said, brother.

Put a new penny on a 1/4 oz jighead under a popping cork. It’s a good substitute for live bait. Another tip is to not put it back in your tackle box after use as it will probably leak and stink up everything you own.

Well, that and the fact the Gulp will dehydrate and become like a piece of jerky welded to your jig head. Always remove the Gulp from your hook/jig head when your done with it. Otherwise you’ll have to rehydrate the bait or scrap the jig head all together.

A very tough piece of jerky at that. You will have to cut it off with wire cutters if it stays overnight. Jig head is probably ruined forever. Take them off when the fishing is over with.
