Fished out of Belle Isle on the Carolina Knights. Caught a few dolphin in 150’ then did a 170’ dive on southwest Banks. Took some good video with a speargun mounted hd camera. Saw some good grouper late in the dive but just didn’t have enough bottom time to ethically go after them especially solo.
2nd dive was all red snapper. Big schools of them on the video. They were all over in 140’. I wish i had used the camera when i dove a couple weeks ago. I saw probably 3 times this many on my dives in 100’ of even larger snapper but didn’t film it.
Dive 3 was on the Anchor Wreck. Filmed some good video sticking big flounder. Water is still pretty cold, lots of fish out there.
Yes, DC; you are right. All 500,000 ARS that SAFMC says are left in the south atlantic inhabit only a couple dozen spots off SC. They are merely the result of “a few good recruiting year classes” and don’t really indicate anything at all about the fishery’s health because the chevron traps come up empty and the fish houses and headboats don’t have the same numbers as the 1970’s when it was 90% commercial instead of 90% recreational (unreported) like now.
Makes perfect sense. Fish don’t swim. And they definately care about their legal domicile. This is why they prefer waters off SC. They get removed to Federal jurisdiction every time it seems, however.
Nice vids,Rob.I went for a btm fishing trip to 90ft Friday afternoon and had to shift away from red snapper and greenhead bsb…crazy. You still married to that pretty girl?

Phin, those fish were silver not red. I think they are some kind of porgy or something. Not to mention they are way to big to only be a year old. Remember a year ago most red snapper were extinct.
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

I didn’t go back and look at the time stamp but there as a nice Taug in one of the videos. The spot on the side of the fish indicates the sex as female if I remember correctly. They are a very good tasting fish. They feed mostly on custations and we used sand fleas, green crabs and blue crabs.
