Gun dog info

I plan on getting a dog here soon and I wanna be able to take it bird hunting with me but my dad dosent wanna put up with a real hyper dog. Id like to get a lab, pointer, golden retiver or anything in that area. If I get a bird dog is it worth spending the money on getting one already trained or should I just get a well genetic dog and send it to a gun dog trainging kennel? Also if anyone knows good breeders/training kennels or any litters comeing being born all the help would be great.

Scratch pointer off that list.

Tell your dad to kiss you butt and get a GSP. Ida’s 6 mos old and goes to the office with me every day. Hyper at times but well behaved and learned the office is no place for that.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Dellingersshorthairsandbrittanys.com in Gainesville, GA. Top quality GSP’s with excellent pedigree and certifications. Dr. Dellinger is a retired vet and won’t sell a dog with any problems. I had one of his females and for some reason, we think she was damaged when we had her spayed, got lymphangiestasia so we had to put her down. Dr. Dellinger gave me Ida even though Bella was 5 years old.

After buying a lab and then spending 1g having him trained only to find out he just didn’t have “it” I would definitely recommend buying a started dog so you don’t waste a whole lot of time and money getting attached to what is now a well trained pet.

Only reason I said scratch pointer off the list is because you gotta be ready for one. They aren’t a breed that just lays around all day. Mine is very well behaved but I have unfortunately seen gsp’s that were nightmares and that was due to lack of attention and ****ty owners. I’m assuming the op is young and living at home, that being said, when you out chasing women on the weekend your dad may not want your dog sitting there staring him down thinking “alright pops, get up and let’s go kill something”, and a gsp is ready to roll 24/7. Hell, I can’t say deer or bird without mine going to the door ready to ride. Great dogs if you are 100% committed.

Thanks for the all help what I am looking for is a dog that will retrieve birds but one I can take with me anywhere and one thats good in water so i can take him marsh hen and duck hunting, so I dont plan for a dog to be completely B.A at bird hunting so I dont wanna go and speend $1,000 on a puppie from one of these high dollar kennels just a pure breed I do want a dog with pretty good genes and not just a mutt off the side of the road but if anyone knows any body that has a litter of puppies or expecting a litter please inform me. Also do gsp’s sheed very much I have read about them and just wondering if they have that problem? Thanks for all of the help

They shed for sure but I wouldn’t call it heavy. The reason the GSP is being suggested is that they are probably the most versatile breed around. Salty849 is spot on though. And I had one that you couldn’t even spell bird around or she went nuts.

You might want to check uot Springer Spaniels also if you plan on hunting the marsh. I’ve had both German Shorthairs and Springers. The Springers were better in the water and at fetching. Both breeds were great.

The 3 springers I’ve had have been great. Firstly, great pets–well disciplined and eager to please.

Secondly, probably the best water retrievers I’ve seen. Good generalized fetchers.

Best thing is if you get one with a good nose. These dogs are great on upland game. Don’t point but their little bob will sure let you know if anything is around.

As far as a fantastic all around hunter/pet I highly recommend a Boykin. After the lab flop I got my youngest son a Boykin and I’m sold on the breed. Will lay on the sofa all weekend with you or hit the dove fields with incredible drive. Absolutely the best all around dog I’ve ever had. No more labs at my house.

CD, I have to disagree, I have seen some sh*&y swamp poodles. It is in the breeding. If you buy crap you get crap (before you go all crazy… I am not saying you bought crap). I have a yellow lab that will lay on the bed with you with her head in your lap and when you say the word duck she is ready to roll. I also have one in training right now that I know already will be jam up. I am taking him as far as I can take him.
But with every dog you have to be ready.

Going to Church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

You are the offspring of 5 monkeys having But Secs with a retarded fish squirrel. CONGRADULATION!!!

I think GSPs are great, but I side more with labs. I have a 1.5yr silver female that just loves to go for her daily “hunt 'em up.” She was in the water at 4 months retrieving dummies. She was out last dove season chasing them down. Can’t ask for much better.

We do not rise to the occassion…but fall to the level of our training

Haz, theres an old book by James L Free called Training Your Retriever that used to be very good for taking a lab to the next level. There are a lot of newer books out there but that old book had some very good information in it. Even if it doesnt help train the dog should help educate the trainer.

No problem Haz. The trainer told me at 8 weeks he just wasn’t sure about the dog and tried to say it was because he was a chocolate. I’ve heard the same thing from others about chocos being a little more sensitive and mine definitely falls into that category although I’ve seen good and bad in all colors. He’s not gun shy nor is he a coward (lay a hand on my wife or kids and you’ll learn the hard way) but he doesn’t take scolding very well. My point is if you’re looking for a dedicated hunter then the odds are much greater in your favor if you buy a good dog that’s been started or even more finished from a good trainer. Given the choice I would not choose a 100 lb lab as strictly a pet.
