Gut Wrench grouper slaying 8-30-08

with the help of a felllow PN and A-dock member (bloodline and crew)we had 1 of our best bottom fishing/meat fish days…

when i lay awake thinking/planing these trips this is how they should be…

the final tally was like 15 scamps,1 18-20lb gag,1 large speckled hind/kitty mitchell,3 dolphin…and a bunch of big AJ’s(not kept),trout will be very sore tomorrow.

what a freaking great weather and fishing day…

live bait…pinfish was the hot setup for us

thanks to the crew belly up,fish n kid, trout, monica and will.

Heres a pro tip for ya…do not get your fingers close to a gags mouth even with his guts hanging out,his instinct is to close his jaw,it f-ng hurts like hell…

A “good” captain also knows the limitations of his vessel.

How deep were you? Congrats on the good day!

If you are not the lead dog, the view is all the same.

280-303 ft…

LR; glad to hear you had a great day, hope you enjoy consuming your catch. That is the best part to me, I like to eat and share the bounty of the sea with faimly and friend. Great day I hope you have many more.

Wow!,no really…WOW!

Indeed, thats how it should be.

I have only one question, …were you anchored or drifting?

WOW!

Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good but I wanna see it.
Lights On!

2002 Sea Hunt Triton 210
150 Yammy SS II

very slow drifting.

i have 800 ft of anchor line but didn’t want to deal with it plus the wind and current where very light…

i only kept 3-4 small fillets,i let the crew get the majority…i know the next nice sat i will be out there again…

You using electrics that deep, or fishing? My buddy swears by the electric. But the other day I outfished him 3 to 1. We were only in 100’, but I would be tempted in 300’.

Congrats on the great day. Sounds like we should have gone a little deeper. Current was running in 160’. Thats alot of cranking or did you use electric?

Electric reels in less than 400 ft are for old people like edisto fisher that lack strength in the arms and shoulder area and commonly have fragile bones. So the answer is no, on the electric reels.

Freshwater is for drinking.

no electrics, there was one on the boat but the crew would have none of that…penn Baja specials withh 100lb power pro…

I have two but they have not been used in years. I have taken a 65, 76, and a 80 year old in the last few weeks and they cranked all day but next time I’m going to hook them up. I would not be ashamed to use one in 300’ and I think I’m fairly strong. Sometimes it has more to do with lazy:sunglasses:.

i got the camera out on the boat and was greeted with a “lens error” so no action shots. I did got at the dock with my phone.

Good going LR. Bellyup cooked some of the fish for us last night out at Schools Out’s, very tasty. Ask him how the Kitty tasted and what a hot fillet feels like in the palm of your hand.

Nice Bob! I really enjoyed our trip out with you in July… but what’s up with the 80’s rock! Just kidding. I’ll listen to it all day out there. Thanks again for the great trip and congrats on the 8/30 catch.

i guess my age is starting to show?

when you going again?

Thanks to everyone for the kind words…

Hopefully sooner than later. No excuses, but it’s tough with the young family and business to break away for the weekend these days. Highly recommend to anyone a day on the Gut Wrench.
Hoping we don’t get our asses handed to us with the shotgun blast of storms out there!

Thanks again Bob for a great day, and to Bloodline for the tip. Arms still hurt. Bloodline, didn’t y’all take some action shots from your boat?
