H&T Sat & Sun

Sat put out our spread in 250 ft and the line at 185 takes off and then drops it. Reeled the line in quickly to change the bait and at about 60 feet I noticed the bait appeared to be untouched. Then I saw a sail grab the bait and start running. I planned to count to 10 before setting the drag, but somewhere around 3 the hammer was somehow dropped. Needless to say, missed first sail. Followed that up with a sail that grabs the bait, skys and gone. A few more strikes, but nothing in the boat. We noticed on several strikes that the baits appeared untouched.

Sun started about the same place. Had a couple of “untouched” strikes. The next strike I decided to free-spool. Felt the fish start pulling the bait faster than the boat speed. Hooked up and released our first sail (my first sailfish also). My buddy had similar strike problems, but we started to get the hang of it. He then caught his first sail.

Ended up with 3 out of 5 sails landed and big smiles.

H&T

I also caught what I thought was a blackfin tuna Sunday. I have an HMS, but did not have it on board and I wasn’t sure about the ID. So I had to release it. Can someone ID this?

Here are pics of the sails:

H&T

Bonita…caught several amongst the sails fri/sat that were 20+ lbs…some of the largest we had seen around here for many years

That’s a skipjack tuna. Lines along the belly are the key identification.

Good bait, not anything compared to Blackfin as far as table fair. Fun to catch though.

Behind this helm stands a sickness that not even a women can cure.

Pardon me…an ARTIC bonita, AKA skipjack tuna, aku, or oceanic bonita-whatever the hell you want to call it!

Take your pick…still a f’n BONITA any way you want to look at it. And yes we caught several in excess of 20 lbs…think I am pretty decent at estimating fish weight as I was plus/minus a half pound of both the tuna and dolphin that we weighed in this weekend!

Loosing focus of the original post----------

Good job on the sails and you didn’t miss anything by throwing back that fish! The best thing you could use it for would have been belly strips if you ran out of dinks!

Nice job on the Sails! Glad to see the little guys getting in on the action.

George Carlin said it best, ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that’’.

Yeah, those slashes were wild but weren’t from a gaff. Something tried to eat him. Whatever attacked him didn’t cut him in half like or rip his tail off. There was one “hole” and several slashes which looked more like a knife cut. I have no idea what did this. He hit the wayback, so it took a little longer to get him in the boat.
