Took my two boys out Sunday for some bottom fishing. It was 10 yr old Korey’s first “real” offshore trip other than a 4 mile run off of Islamorada a few years back. Left JIYC at 0615 and ran to some good bottom I found earlier in the year just shy of 100’. Quickly found some nice porgies and BSB. Small sharks everywhere taking bait before it hit bottom. Had some kings sky for mullet we chummed up but could not get them to bite a live bait rig. Kept looking for that red grouper hole we found before, but was hard to keep a consistent drift due to shifting winds. Finally hit the right spot on our last drift of the day and the youngin’ nailed a nice grouper. Had to get his older brother to help him reel it in. Smiles abound. He is hooked. He out-fished all of us! Released over 100 fish, kept just 12 nice BSB, 8 porgies and the one red grouper. Back at the dock by 3PM.
Its great to see the kids getting in on this. Personally, I cannot wait for it. I have my first one on the way.

Yes, I was worried about the youngin’ on the way out. A little choppy with a south head wind. He did great. Held up better than his old man. He can’t wait to go again.

Are you from Nova Scotia? I spne t35 days up there in 2001
Nah. Just a local from JI. Halifax came from a saying my Dad used when we were young…“Goin’ to Halifax”…which meant absolutely nothing or nowhere to us. Just stuck with us for some reason.

I grew up in Halifax County, NC which in colonial days was a temporary capitol. It’s about 400 miles north of James Island. BTW, the best view I’ve ever seen is the one from JIYC and Sunrise Park. Simply awesome!
