halls chophouse

im coming to charleston on friday march 29th and would like to eat at halls chophouse. they said the only reservation time they have available is at 5 and 930, nothing in between. does anyone have a connection that could get me a table around 7ish?? any help would be appreciated. thank you

Most restaurants will tell you this when you try to make reservations for two reasons. First it makes them look very busy and in high demand. The second reason is that they know the restaurant will be busy from 630- 9 on any Friday, so when you call a couple weeks out they figure you really want to eat there and will take whatever time you can get. I would try again using as much charm as possible. If they still say no ask to be putt on a waiting list in case of a cancellation then ask them to recommend another restaurant. Good luck. Chris

I would take this guys advice when it comes to restaurants. Or better yet, just go to his. Glass Onion in West Ashley. Excellent food, great prices and knowledgeable, friendly servers. Hall’s is great also, but you are partly paying for the location. There are plenty of options in Charleston, but if you’ve got your heart set on Halls because you’ve never been there, i can understand that too.

Good luck and have fun while your here.

29th is not a tuesday! no fried chickens

Real strange family that runs that place, most everyone thats been there a few times comments about them. I know them well. I stay away from the place myself unless its meeting people for drinks, probably the most overpriced place downtown for the same food you get at any of the nicer restaurants. More of a tourist place now, the locals know better.

Uhhhh… Glass Onion vs Halls? They are not even in the same league. I’m not saying that the food at GO is not good. But, the scene is totally different.

Hall’s is great, but I have had some consistency issues there. One time I think it’s mediocre and the next time I think it’s the best thing I ever had, next time, just okay, and then, it’s great.

If you are on the Hall’s budget, you should see if Grille 225 has any openings. I would probably say it’s better than Hall’s but about the same price and atmosphere.

jipride is the chef/owner of the Glass Onion…don’t think it was a comparison of the two, just commenting on his comment…

Bonzo, ask you wife which is the best! If anybody would know she would! Or he could go online to the Best of Charleston and get a review.

For steaks Oak or Grille 225 is better than Hall’s IMO. As I said, alot of locals have turned away from Halls, overpriced and has consistency issues.

We did grill 225 last time we came to charleston and really enjoyed it. I was looking at halls because it is within walking distance within our hotel. I will check out oak, or is there any other place that we should check out around the king st area?

Check out Macintosh. Located on King St. Same people that own Oak. If you like steak the deckle is the best part of the cow no question. Its on the menu at Macintosh

Oh and thanks for all the props everybody.

Yup. I am not knocking on GO. I've eaten there once and enjoyed my meal. I'm just saying that it doesn't offer the same "steak house" dining experience as a Hall's or Grill 225 if that is the type of atmosphere that someone is looking for. I think of GO as more of a casual dining experience...

I think Oak is on Broad. I've eaten at "The Ordinary" which is up king from Halls... It's still that upscale dining experience, but it's not a place to find red meat. Don't go there unless you are in the mood for seafood. If they have grouper cheeks on the menu order as many as you can. Best thing on the menu!

Also, if you don’t need the steakhouse experience, Basil is the best Thai food on the planet. Heck, I don’t even eat Thai food, but I loved Basil.

Also, next door to Macintosh is Stars. I have not eaten at Stars but they have a bar on the roof that is totally worth the elevator ride. Nice view and good drinks.

I second and third the Basil duck…and I could just about eat the peanut sauce for the spring rolls right out of the container…

Easy, Mrs. Bonzo is not really a food “comparer”…she knows what good food is and who has good food and honestly I think she would rather go to Glass Onion than Halls, but I will say again that Halls’ filet with the gorganzola accoutrement is some of the best steak I’ve ever put in my mouth…

Bonz, I think you mean when you say (gorganzola accountment) your talking about stuff piled on top of the steak! Right?, Kind of like Liver and Onions? That being said I’ve never eaten at Hall’s so will with hold any review! I do know good food though and the GO is good and I recommend it! I’ve routed airline flights because I’ve heard they have good food in a city!
