I’ve bought a bottle of champagne in a couple of places that was two or three hundred dollars a bottle. You know, I never even got the champagne, but boy was it fun waiting for it.

Being in my early 60’s I’ve had the benefit of observing the cycle of consumerism over many decades of adult life. When I was younger I sought out products that implied that I was “cool” and cutting edge in order to appear culturally significant within my peer group. As time went by I saw how shallow and financially ignorant most of those choices were, and I began to develop a sense of “true” value when I made purchases. I became aware of the hype and began to see through it, as most of what was hyped was very temporary and of little or no true value. Of the hyped products that began to lose appeal to me was overpriced prepared food, and funky tasting expensive beer in colored bottles. There was a place on Cumberland Street called Captain Harry’s Blue Marlin Bar, and a place on the IOP called The Windjammer, and a restaurant on Folly Rd. called Sam’s that represent to me what true value, and the Charleston experience were all about. There were other great establishments like Mano’s on upper meeting street, and Kitty’s on Morrison Drive to name two that always made you feel welcome and appreciated for being who you really are. I could name others equally qualified to meet my value criteria, and verify that I’m not holed up on the fringe of civilization reveling in my isolation. I’ve eaten in fine restaurants in NYC, LA, Chicago, London and other locations as a matter of living life, and I still get a better thrill out of spending my money on a quality pair of hunting boots than on a meal from a menu with no prices. I’m just sayin’.

What does mrs. Boss dog say about sitting at home while you drink your scotch, pet your pure breed, oil your gun…under and over of course, and talk about the old days at capt. Harry’s?

Thanks for the lesson on brewing, maybe you could expound on the virtues of stinky cheese or fermented cabbage. Attitude noted, relevance discounted.
Dear Skinny…Having had a career in financial services that included managing many millions of other people’s money, I must admit that I shied away from advising people to spend too much. If you were to interview any number of people who have had the chance to observe my behavior, materialistic would be a stretch. My 2001 GMC Yukon(that’s 13 years old if you do the math) has 160K on it, and the A/C hasn’t worked for the last 4 years. I live in the same house since 1982. I will admit that I will never own anything but a purebred dog with a championship pedigree, and that I prefer over and under’s to automatic shotguns. I would never spend $25 on a bottle of potato squezzin’s dude…you can get it in a plastic bottle a lot cheaper than that!!Sol Mate

YOU weren’t able to survive in Charleston, SC.
This is more fun than pulling the wings off houseflies. I knew that I’d get pure agitation and lip bubbles from the narcissists, snobs and democrats on this subject. Skinnee thinks I’m cheap, Big Dog W/G implies that I’m a wife beater, and good ol’ Tang wants to throw a Gucci loafer at me. Well, Skinnee’s not aware that I paid cash for 2 college degrees… Citadel '07 and Clemson 2011 + Clemson Graduate Degree 2013. Not “cheap” my friend, but some (() good ROI(return on investment), a surgical instrument rep and a structural engineer both making six figures before their 30th birthdays. Big Dog W/G doesn’t know that I met my beautiful wife of 32 years at the Windjammer because I could tell her everything about the Miniature Schnauzer breed that she brought with her(they let dogs in back then)who loves to stay home, work in the yard, and give kisses to our Boykin Spaniel(his name is Boss). And as for Tang, well I guess he’s just plain different than me, and that helps make the world go round and round. As for Saifish…I’m flattered if the offer is genuine. I truly respect your talent in the photography arena. You have posted some outstanding work on this site that I have enjoyed. Hey, Blue Runner…you give me hope that I can get a few more years out of my truck. My “cheap ass” loves paying that $65.00 in property taxes each year to renew the plate. I do want to bring the discussion back around to Mr. Bonzo who is worth at least ten times what I am, who I believe owned and ran one of the most respected and successful mechanical contracting businesses in Chas., employed many, many people who supported families and their communities via his generosity, and who by my judgement is a true southern gentleman. He should enjoy the pleasure of dining with his wife anywhere he (() well pleases. I hope my boys turn out just like him.

Dear Skinee…You are SERIOUSLY conflicted. Your recent reply on ROI imply’s a level of ignorance that is hard to fathom(not a nautical term in this use). I dare say that any reader, or poster, who has a committed family life that includes their own children does not ponder the equation as you reference it. You sound like a typical Democrat who resorts to statistics and numbers when your argument is specious and illogical. Trust me Dude when I tell you that I’ve dealt with your kind all my life, and I have learned that if a dog wants to chase cars, there’s not much anyone can do about it. At least you keep the strippers employed, and we’re all grateful for that contribution to society. Go ahead and post your reply, but I’m done with you. Adios.

I just find it funny that as a “financial advisor that managed other people’s millions” that you don’t even know what a ROI is. That implies that you invested time or money into something and you go something back.
Try to follow my logic here. It’s going to exercise your tiny brain a little, but try to keep up… Did you ever think that your investment was a matter of the time you spent the first 18 years of your kids life? You know, those times where you instilled a hard work ethic, helped them with their homework, set a good example for them, and taught them the importance of success? That was your real investment. To bad, you are too ignorant to realize that. Those are the reasons why your kids gradua

This thread was about someone asking about Hall's Chophouse, and you stepped in with no advice on dining, but only to preach how people should find value in their life! Sounds to me like bossdog is the one chasing cars... Then claiming that you are putting out "bait" and hooking people and all that nonsense that small minded people say when they aren't smart enough to comeback with a meaningful response. You are seriously boring... And you need to get out of the house and see the world.
