Hand Line Tips

My grandma wants me to make her a handline for fishing in the creek.

I was just going to pyramid sinker on the bottom and two hooks above it and use some crabbing line if it felt thick enough in my hands. Anyone have any other suggestions? Biggest thing she might run into is a 26" red.

Maybe use something a little heavier for the main line, barrel swivel tied to it, then mono bottom rig with the hooks and sinker.

Do you think you could talk her into one of those new fangled fishin sticks?

She’s too old school for dem fancy thangs. My uncle has about 20 under her house.

What about a cane pole? About as simple as it gets:wink:

Haha I would have to make her tie off to the dock with that or just tie the pole off. We get 26" Reds by the house on the regular so I would like to avoid finding grandma in the mud or a rod missing.

I already told her she’ll have to tie off the hand line.

GW, can I volunteer to come catch fish for Grandma?

BTW, found this.

I’ve seen many commercial fishermen using hand lines in the Bahamas and Central America. They use a coffee can as a reel and can cast it like an open face spinning reel. Those guys catch more fish than I do :sunglasses:

When I lived in Fla., the Cubans used something very similar. They used a coke can, dimpled in the center to hold the line. Same way, cast it like a spinning reel.

We took a panga trip off the beach in Costa Rica a few years ago. They had two old crappy 4/0s and some Cuban yo-yos. I chose the yoyo, we were dropping chicken rigs in 160-180’ and filled a 40 or so quart cooler in no time. Grouper, tiles and snapper. It was really cool, but I got some serious blisters…tell her to wear some good gloves! I think we were using 150-200 pound mono main lines.

I really don’t think you want grandma hand lining anything particularly a 26" red unless you want granny coming back minus a finger or two or possibly a whole hand especially if you are thinking about some small diameter line/rope/chord as in crabbing line.

I’m just saying . . .
