I saw Old Ranger’s post on the Inshore Reports group mentioning he wants to figure out a way to set up a camera on his kayak. It got me to thinking I wouldn’t mind having one myself for when I trout fish from my kayak in the Saluda river, so I did a little searching.

This is a cheap one with pretty low res, but I’ve also seen some with optical zoom and 1080p res. Pretty sure I’m gonna try one, just trying to figure out which one to go with.
Have any of you guys tried or use any of these type camera/recorders?

I’ve got an Olympus 550 WP camera that shoots nice pics and video. It’s waterproof to 10 feet and has digital zoom. Any pics of mine on here for past 18 months are with that camera.
Santa just brought me a Go Pro Hero. I rigged it for 1 touch video and love it. Shot this last week as a teaser.

Thanks…I was just looking at a Go Pro at Best Buy yesterday. They had one left and I thought about snatching it up, but I was hesitant to do that without checking some reviews on it first. That’s exactly what I want to use it for.
So you have it mounted to a helmet and put the helmet on when you want to take video?

It has an elastic helmet strap that fits nicely over a ball cap. I wore it 3 days in a row for 6-7 hours per day.
There are a few different mounts that come in the kit. One is double sided tape on a curved base, another a flat base, one a goose neck for playing with angles. It comes in the cool clear plastic case with the base plate and I shoved the base plate in the strap of my PFD to shoot this.

It’s not quite at eye level, but seems a little more natural than the over fthe head view.
I compressed these down to CRAPPY resolution to make them easy to upload to youtube. It looks AMAZING plugged into a 50" flat screen in HD mode. In HD it uses about 1 megabite per second, ao a 1 minute clip is 60MB of data. My home network just isn’t up to the task of uploading huge files. the compressed version is only 2 mb and gets the point across.

Just watched it full screen on a 21" monitor. Excellent quality video. Really cool!
Appreciate the help. The Go Pro people owe you one. I’ll have one soon.

That was awesome video quality, especially for Youtube fullscreen.
Glad to help. Give me a shout if you have any questions. I’ll be doing a kayak fishing seminar at the Charleston Boat Show later this month. Come by and say hi.
