It started out at 7am when Gregg the owner of the MissEmily invited me offshore. We put in at Remleys Point at 7am.
We then shot out to the jetties for some bait along with a few other boats we found that there was slim pickins, after searching for 1.5 hours we headed towards Ft Sumpter and a Truly appreciated fisherman in a gray hulled boat told us the bait was by the Fort in a mass of explosive energy. We got our needed fill in 1 throw and off we went to the wild blue yonder.
Took off for a 3 mile tour and ended up 47ish miles offshore in 100 to 110 ft of water. Got the baits out and slow trolled for a while. Then around 12:30 the drag breaks loose and in comes a nice just bigger then peanut mahi. We then made a few more passes and about 30 minutes later a nice mahi rips the drag loose again. Then it happened. Heartbreak and a straightened hook made that nice mahi’s day as it winked and laughed at us and BAM another hookup this time the fishin gods were with us and we boated a 2nd mahi.

By now Gregg was itchin to do some diving and we shot in to a wreck in 92ft of water (dont ask me for the exact location I dont know but maybe gregg will spill it for ya). As Gregg and 2 others were getting ready to dive Woody hookes up on a long Cuda that decided to show us his attitude by scorching thru the air 4 times before fighting to the finish.

As Gregg and the guys were still getting dressed in their scuba gear I dropped a line and watched as my bait was destroyed by a VW BUG the shot down to the depths and broke my steel leader. Re-rig and a new Menhaden and I float another as I hear Woody say he hooked up and broke a leader I watched a AmberJack engulf my bait and go straight to Davey Jones’s Locker. I heaved and nothin. He kept goin like
The Grey hulled boat is the new In2Deep.

Tell us about the diving, please.
I didn’t dive cause I dont know how. Hopefully Gregg will get on here and give ya the skinny on that part.
IN2DEEP thank you so much for in bait info we all appreciated it greatly. Without your help we might not have caught what we had.
tight lines everyone…
Diving was great. vis was at least 60ft. There was very little current. Swimming pool conditions. The guys chose to see the y-73, they had never dove Charleston. There were tons of AJs and cudas. No shootables to be found, we did not see the old 300lb jewfish that hangs out under the stern. Great dive best vis in a long time with no current.

You meant Goliath grouper right?
Fish-n-Kid
I fish alot more than you.
Freshwater is for drinking.
Got a question that’s going to show that I am a newbie to offshore fishing; but what is the reel that is attached to the t-top post for? Is it for a topwater line while fishing for kings with a balloon?
“Lead The Way”… US Army Rangers '62-'72
like all members of the grouper family, jewfish love structure - rocks, ledges, culverts, pipes, bridge pilings, shipwrecks and countless others all are potential home to these giants. In fact, jewfish are notorious for taking up residence very close to land - one such bridge in Clearwater was home to a triple-digit size beast, living a stone’s throw from the seawall. I always wondered how many “snags” encountered by bridge fishermen were actually the Big Fella slurping down their bait and simply sitting there in his rocky lair until the line broke from the strain.
A jewfish is a goliath grouper.

In 2001 the American Fisheries Society renamed the jewfish (Epinephelus itajara) the goliath grouper out of concern for the potential offensiveness of the name. I forgot about The PC era.
Sorry.

Wasnt Goliath that biblical monster that spent most of his time beating the crap out of Jews ? If I was Jewish I would be proud to have a fish named after me.
I didnt know they would take up residence that close to shore. A few years ago we were fishing under the bridge going to hilton head and kept having a fish break our 50 lb dacron line like it was nothing. The bite would be subtle but when you set the hook it was an all out tug of war for a few seconds and then the line would snap. Always wondered what it was. Very well could have been one of those big groupers.
Catfish
If you look in the archives you can see where a couple of guys were surf fishing in florida and pulling in 300#+ over and over right from shore using a kayak to take the bait out to them. I dont recall how posted it or when but its been about a year or so ago.
They were using 12 to 15 ft surf rods with what looked like a penn senator reel.
Very impressive I must say.
