Happy Birthday Mrs Eugenia Duke

What a grand Southern belle

Today let us pause to remember a magnificent culinary hero of the South, who died on this day in 1968. I refer, of course, to Mrs. Eugenia Duke. In 1917 Mrs. Duke began selling sandwiches to the soldiers stationed at Camp Sevier, near her home in Greenville, South Carolina. The sandwiches were a hit and her business soared, primarily because of her amazing homemade mayonnaise. In 1923 she decided to focus on selling jars of the mayonnaise, causing her business to boom ever more, and in 1929 she sold her company to Richmond-based C.F. Sauer Company, a family-owned business that continues to produce Mrs. Duke’s peerless mayonnaise. Duke’s is incomparable, of course, and the quality of our lives would be greatly diminished without it. As for you misguided Philistines who are not devotees of Duke’s, bless your hearts.

Dukes,., EF tried and tested and given a solid two thumbs up :+1::+1:

Psssst…

You can find the C.F. Sauer brand Mayonnaise at most grocery stores, around these parts.

Essentially the same product as “Duke’s” only quite a bit cheaper.

And, “Duke’s Sandwich Shop” is still in business, although no longer affiliated with the Mayonnaise, right off Poinsett Highway, near Cherrydale, here in Greenville.
