Yesterday could not have been better conditions… put in at DNR and paddled toward the connector. Water was crystal clear and no breeze on the harbor. Caught two real nice trout (over 17") trolling grubs, then I found a fishy spot and hooked into a monster red on my ultralight spinning rod. Slammed the grub as soon as it hit the water. 8 lb test held onto him for 2-3 minutes… very intense fight! then he snapped off, ■■■■ those fish fight hard!
Water was so clear I was watching the school chase after him during the fight and bite at the grub still in his mouth! Coolest thing ive seen out there. Switched to the 7’ with 10# and hooked into another 5 minutes later. Same thing, long fight, wrapped around a pylon, snapped me off. 5 Minutes later, hook into another one, not nearly as big as the first two, but he ran for the grass instead of the pylon… Fought for a while, then into the net.
First red from the kayak and it was a beauty, 23". Not bad for two hours on the water. All went for a red/gold saltwater assassain on red/white jighead on incoming tide. Wish I couldve stayed out longer.
whtz, thanks. Throwing in at DNR is a little sketchy actually. I used to just put in next to their docks, but was told to stop this summer. Its hit or miss, so now I call my buddy to see if the marina is clear.
mud- yeah, just found out about sunrise. that is a really good spot if you don’t mind dragging your kayak 50yrd and down some rocks. ill be out there again this week as soon as the weather cooperates.
pb, it looked like at high tide just up and to the right from where you park, may be a easy side in. Maybe a couple of rocks but not as many as further up from there.
