Have all of the little sharpnose and bonnetheads shown back up in the harbor?
What about the big reds? Are they around consistently or not so much yet?
I’ve been asked to take someone from out of town fishing next week. While I’m trying like mad to get consistent at catching fish, I’m still skunking pretty often. Last summer I could at least get out of town friends to catch a few sharks and big reds in the harbor, but maybe it’s a little early for that?
I’m all about trout or flounder in the creeks, but I’m seriously bad at finding them and I would prefer to have an out of town friend at least catch something. This person has never been to Charleston, is from far away, and I’d love for them to have a good experience. At the least, the lowcountry is beautiful from the water, but geez a guaranteed fish or two would be nice.
I’m open to suggestions, and am going to try and get out at least once for a trial run before next week.
I would suggest that you go buy a Hot Spots map which will show some areas for fishing. Regarding trout, get a popping cork and put a mud minnow. shrimp or finger mullet under is and work grass lines and mouths of creeks on the upper part of incoming tide and the top of the out going tide. Reds = cut mullet, shrimp or live mud minnows around structure - docks, smaller mouth creeks, etc. Keep in the mind the tide drives how and when fish bite. It is the dinner bell so keep mental notes of what tide and where you catch fish. Tight lines and keep on fishing.

If you got a good depth finder cruise dynamite hole toward morrisisland andthe lighthouse or toward fortsumter and find the ledge where it drops off. Then go up current and drift to get an idea of how to anchor. Anchor up and let the tide tumble your bait down the ledge. Be aware of waves and wakes.
Consider buying a $5 box of chum from wallyworld. Works for whiting just as well as it does sharks. Don’t forget the potato sack to hang it in.

I was also wondering about fishing under the bridge. I’ve been told it’s impossible to catch anything unless the tide is slack. Sounds correct as the current is usually ripping through there. Anyone have experience under the bridge? I know theyre’s monster reds but don’t know where to start. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
But for you Moral Kiosk, like C Tackle said, buy a top spot map. Use that to start off your search. If it’s a trout spot, my go to is a popping cork and shrimp but mud minnows also work. I always fish for trout on a rising tide. Also I highly recommend asking someone at your local tackle shop while you get your gear. They always know whats biting and for the most part they are very friendly.
