Would like to start a discussion about fall fishing for False albacore. Any one like this fish as much as I do .For a small fish nothing fights better or is prettier to catch
I’d love to get some advice on how to catch them.

I remember as a child fishing in Florida with my dad and getting into a school of em. Took a good few home and mom cooked them… I believe that is the only fish I’ve ever seen my Dad not eat.
Small Gotcha lure, sabiki rigs, small speck rigs with a little bit of squid or shrimp… fast and erratic retrieval.
Its not hard to catch them if you find them. run and gun gotchas, small xraps that kind of thing.reel as fast as you can, Judging by the lack of responses I guess they dont have them in Charleston. However right now they are in Marthasvinyard and all those fish need to come back south in a few weeks

Ive always called hardtails those little fish that look like jacks, i think they are blue runners. They are a bait fish. Probably creating confusion with the name.
Here people call them Bonita and most people hate catching them. Anytype of small, heavy, flashy jig works. Casting far and reeling fast. Any bait that mimics a glass minnow or anchovy is good also. They make great bait and early spring and late fall they come in close. Ive seen off the beach once when i was in a kayak in november.
Its funny to hear this about bonita. Anyone who hates to catch them should just call themselves a meat hunter and not a fisherman who loves the fight of a beautiful fish with speeds of 30mph. I guess the charter guys hate them because its not meat for their clients. By the way my wife knows how to make fresh bonita burgers to die for.

If I see them I’ll cast at them for fun. But bait is about all their good for.

I used t catch them all the time trolling for Spanish when I lived in Gulf shores. My son is now 7 and I would love to see if get into a school of them. Do they actually come in the harbor? Or do people catch them out passed the jetties?
Bait is all they are good for is so wrong. Does anyone in Charleston believe in taking pictures and catch and release

Bonita are super sporty and make okay sushi if you bleed and prep. But to me they are super prime shark bait. Ive never heard of them coming into the harbor. I have heard of them being with in sight of the beach on several occasions but this is from edisto south and its common to catch them at the nearshore reefs in winter.
Bonito and False Albies (Little Tunny) are different. I hear bonito is pretty good. I’ve had little tunny before too – I just shredded it and made tuna salad. It was fine, but I’ll release any I catch from now on.
That being said, I think the albies would make great catch and release fun-fishing. They are a popular target for fly and light(ish) tackle fishing.

lb for lb or lets say a fish under 10lbs they are the best fighting fish. Fun to grab them by the tail and throw them back torpedo style. When i lived in Ft myers the highlight of my year was the first2 weeks of November when they showed up

I have recently caught several off folly just outside the stono river breakers. Had fun… I will always stop to catch breaking fish offshore.
