Hartwell Ramps need help

Just wanted to post this so everyone can see how low Hartwell is, the upstate is in a severe drought and Hartwell has NEVER been this low. We have set up a web site for anyone willing to donate money, USACoE is supplying all labor, to help extend ramps.

Lake is now approx 23’ below and could hit as much as 35’ below if current climate predictions are correct.

You pay 3-4 dollars to launch at some COE ramps. You can also buy a yearly ticket which some people such as myself do for $30. Since I can no longer use my ramp pass are they going to give me my money back…NO!!! I think if you “donate” money you will probablly get the same results that I have gotten. Absolutly NONE

Tommy,
You might be able to negotiate a deal with some of the local concrete companies to donate or reduce the price on concrete used for this project. Of course with the building business being what it is chances of donations may be slim. BTW, still working on the pontoon, deck’s on, ready for carpet as soon as the glue gets here.

I’d rather fish than eat.

$30 a year…I pay $300 a year for a launch pass on IOP. $30 bux is a bargain and you should quit you *****in’. Not the Corps fault it has not rained, althought that is about the only thing we can’t blame on them.

Florida charges for most public ramps, but most have paved parking, picnic tables, trash cans, BATHROOMS and some have showers. Most importantly is they have ample parking and ramps along the coast every few miles in populated areas. Makes a few bucks sound cheap. Never figured why SC has never followed suit.

Capt Mitch, While the Corp of Bunglers can’t make it rain, they can dam sure put the plug in the dam. They are bound to certain release rates and it takes an act of Congress to alter that. Actions should have been put into play long ago to curtail the draining of the system. Isn’t IOP a private ramp? - you are pretty much at their mercy - or lack of.

Good point…It is private, no public ramps within about 8 miles by water and those 8 miles have two no wake zones so it is quite a run just to get where I usually start. Plus the public ramp I am talking about is a reel pain when it comes to parking.

I reelly feel for you guys up there. I used to fish Hartwell all the time for winter stripers. I hear the boat dealers and related vendors are taking a double whammy with the economy and the low lake levels.

However, I have a reelly strong part of me that feels if we (as a nation/state/city/etc) paid for what we directly use versus blanket taxation, then many items such as boat ramps would be better for all “that use them”.

BTW, the IOP ramp will be closing for repair sometime soon…have not been told if we will get a refund or not.

agreed. I accept pay-to play. 30 bux is a bargain, 300 is an outrage. Annual passes on Murray at private ramps run between 75 and 100.

Sorry…but IOP ofers a whole lot of water for your $ so you are getting a pretty good deal. As much as you pay for electricity up here it is the least the COE can do to spend a few thousand dollars to upgrade a couple of ramps.

The drought is the main problem, the USACOE has to release a certain amount of water to keep the natural flow of water going downstream since Hartwell is built on one of the main rivers. If they do not keep the flow of water the saltwater intruision line will creep up the river too far and damage the ecosystem.

As for the $30 annual fee, it is not that big of a deal. Personally I pay $100 yearly to launch at Portman so vehicle is more secure but even they are out of the water. Hopefully they will extend their ramps

This is what the donations have done so far.http://www.klelectronix.com/

The USACOE stated they the had zero money to spend due to being in the Dept of Defense but if the money was raised they would supply the labor, think there was some technicalty where they had to provide labor. So far they have held up their end of the bargain.

Raining again today, not heavy but it is rain

tprice, last i heard portman had no plans to extend,i think that is really stupid on their part.

do you find it odd that after we start getting money for ramps,it starts to rain almost everyday…we should have thought of that 10 months ago…

i heard that 18 mile creek was already extended(just what i heard no real proof)

Portman gets our MONEY in Febuary so I figure if the lake does not come up some by then they will all of a sudden be able to repair/extend it.

18 mile is complete but still will take a little more rain from what I understand to make it usable unless someone adds gravel to it like the Corps has done at other ramps but that one is pretty steep and not sure that would work. If I am correct a group of homeowners in that area chipped in the money for that one.

The ramps that they have added gravel to beyond the concrete seem to work ok, I have only been one time (couple of week ago) and it was not a problem but we were in a buddy of mines boat and it is a 22’ War Eagle CC but is much lighter than mine Sea Pro but really was no problem at all.

The biggest thing I hate about it is all the mud I track in my boat while getting in and out from the bank, thinking of using my waders that I duck hunt in or picking up some hip boots.

Just checked my rain gauge and we got a close to an inch so far from last night and today and still raining offa on. .

Probably need to put a little more $$$ in the offering plate at Church in the am:smiley::smiley:
