Fished not far from Portman Marina . Went up 6&20 creek and downlined bluebacks in 20 to 40 fow when we were in water applicable . My buddy liked the medium minnows .
Caught one white bass and 3 spotted bass , one weighed almost 3# . What was weird was we got many bits on the downlines but when the Bluebacks were pulled back up from a miss and all of the outer skin and a lot of the body meat was gone except the head and hook was left alone . I tried the smaller bluebacks but the same thing happened .
The fish would come up ( looking at the graft ) and check out the bait but swim away without a bite . Several pull downs but misses with bait taken . Fished in anywhere from 20 feet to 60 and lost a few lines to the trees . I had planer boards but creek was to small considering boat traffic .
I have had a few baits get a few scars before but what would be stripping most of the meat from bait .
What ya think ?

Spotted bass are bad bait killers on Hartwell and Russell.

Perch will do it as well…You should be pulling boards and freelines on Hartwell right now
leave the downrods at home unless you plan on cutbaiting with them…

Murrymaker , you are probably right . I did pull a couple freelines out the back with no hits tho . . With the water down 10 feet I should have left the area for a wider section of the lake . . I found it odd last week we got over 15 spots and lots of bait stealers in the same creek , wanted to take another fellow who seems to have bad luck every time we go . . He can only fish weekends ,poor fellow .
Lots of people on hartwell complaining about Not many striper bites but that guide I saw 2 seeks ago had a 4 foot cooler full of fish , easy $400 or 500 for him and some were really nice size . He was headed out again with another bunch to do it again , so said bait store guy.
Oh well going to try another area next time and taking the planer boards . I hope we can go during the week instead of fighting the 6 or 7 bass tourneys on the weekends .
Wish the bass guys would catch all the spots and kill them!! Never throw one back!
My guess would be small Hybrid. We pulled Gizards on four planer boards and two free lines, from the culvert to the left behind Anderson Beach, all the way past Clemson Blvd. Not a peck.
