Hartwell report

Hit the water this am at 6am and had lines in the water around 6:30 on the main channel heading toward the dam. I was using roadrunners with trailers on leadcore line.

Had pretty good am, ended up catching 9 fish and released 4 of them, kept 5 10-12lbers for the grill/frying pan this weekend.

Tried to release some of the bigger fish but could not get them to swim down, they kept laying on surface so I netted them and put them on ice, the smaller fish seemed to do ok when shooting them head first into the water but the bigger ones would keep coming back up.

I headed for the ramp at 11 am, from the sound of the weather radio we have a cold front coming in and the barometric pressure was rising and that seems to always get them biting on leadcore from my experince

Nice, I want to fish there some day. Catching a limit of 10 to 12 pounders on Murray would be a great day. I think there is a way to use a Hypodermic Needle to deflate there airsack and they go down. i am not sure how to so i never tried.

Hell, if I catch ONE 10 or 12 pounder tomorrow I’ll be ecstatic.

I have seen the hypodermic needle used on saltwater fish but have never done it myself and not sure how to do it without killing the fish.I like to eat them and I figure this is the best time of year to keep fish and I know they will not go to waste.

I wish the limit on Hartwell was 5 but it is 10 which I think is tooooo high. Most people do not keep them on Hartwell due to the PCB’s so I guess it does not matter but when I keep fish I limit myself to 5.

These are pretty average fish on Hartwell this time of year. Seems like we always catch good fish while using leadcore in the summer and also while freeling bb’s in winter/spring.

Everytime I try night fishing all I catch as “party fish”(2-4lbs).

Shoot me an email if you are up this way, as I said I am not an expert but I am just going on what I have been shown by others and sometimes it works for me:smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley:

Took the wife out Sat pm after I left my office and we went to the same area. We had lines in the water around 6:30pm and within 20 minutes our first fish hit the downrigger line, 29’.
We stayed on the water till 9pm and ended up with 4 fish and kept 2 for the frying pan for lunch today.

One fish was small at 6lb and the other 3 were 8-10lbs, kept the 2 bigger fish and heating up the cooking oil now

Any chance to catch them theses days without leadcore or downriggers? Thinking of heading out to Hartwell this weekend.

I have never tried this but some guys will use 3-4oz trolling weights and get the lures down to where the fish are.

I have a buddy that is an outdoor writer and I am taking him on Friday, he is doing a story on this type of fishing and has been given some heavier jigs that we are told will bring the same results, I will let you know how we do.

The downriggers are the way to go, the leadcore works but I am never real sure how deep I am but with the downriggers you know exactly. Also if you have never used leadcore it will catch fish but it will also wear you out when you start pulling in a 10lb fish more than a 150 yards back with the boat going 3mph

Went back on Friday and only caught 1 fish, in fact caught him while reeling in last line getting ready to head for the ramp.

Several boats on the water but just could not seem to catch anything, not sure if it was the weather, water not running through the dam or what.

We did check the generation schedule and they were to start at 12 and run water till 10pm. The only fish we caugh was about 12:20 so not sure if that is what affects them or not.

I was down there Friday also . Stayed in sight of the dam the most of the time . I had one pretty good fish on for a little while . I pulled it in about 60 or 70 feet and it came off . I was using a Manns stretch 25 on the hit .Also trolling with other lures using 3 ozs. of lead and a 5 foot leader . I saw a few boats too , but no action .Left about 1 o’clock .
The barometric pressure was wrong , but I went anyway .

Yea last week it was rising all morning long and that seems to be the key, we were there also and did not see much action.

I am not sure if I will get to go back this week or not, really wished I had gone out Sunday am before church but sometimes I do that and get into the fish and then do not make it back in time for the church service

I think barometric pressure has less of an effect on the fish when they are down that deep. Just the way it seems to me.
