Hawaii

Has anyone done any offshore fishing in Hawaii? I am heading down there for a week in September and am thinking of renting a charter for a day.

I used to live in Hawaii and fished offshore fairly regularly. Which island are you visiting?

I’ve fished with Marlin Parker out of Kona, very cool dude, very good fisherman.

Ill be staying in Kona, but ill be traveling between the islands to dive and etc so which specific island isnt a big deal.

Caught some nice Wahoo(Or ONO as they call them) on a charter out of Maui – was years ago - in March during the whale migration - talk about some awesome scenery.

All of the islands have pretty much the same chance of getting into fish, though if you’re looking for big blue marlin, I would go out of Kona on the big island. Its amazing how many different types of pelagics you can get into just a mile offshore. Trolling is fun, but if you can, vertical jigging at the FADs with lighter tackle is about the most fun you can have in my opinion. I mostly fished off of Oahu, windward and leeward sides, depending on the winds.

We caught two wahoo out of Kona in early October 2012. We trolled two lines, no bait, crappy lures 1 mile off the coast as an after thought "just for kicks"while we ran down to Capt Cooks snorkeling area with the kids. Took about 20 minutes to catch two! If I recall, the marina is 10 miles up the Queens HWY near the airport. Lots of options.
If you want to do anything in Kona towards the end of the month,Kona will be swarmed with guys and gals running around in speedos getting ready for the IM championship October 8th. Just be prepared and make reservations early for whatever you want to do.

yeah the first time i went to kona was in October when the iron man was going on. there were people EVERY where. and youre not kidding, speedos and biker shorts every where you look. i tried to convince my wife that i needed to buy a speedo so i could “fit in” but she wasnt so convinced

Thats why I was there in 2012. Of course that was two fishing boats ago, a few beers and 20 lbs later Im lucky to get through a 5k. If you get a chance, check out the underwear runOriginally posted by TheMechanic

Kona is your best bet for big marlin and a shot at short billed spearfish. It is usually really flat, since you are fishing in the lee of the island. Also, most of the boats are about 1/3 of the cost of a charter here, since you are dropping outriggers as soon as you leave the marina.

We got a 550lb marlin with Jeff Fey on Humdinger, who I highly recommend, but you can’t go wrong with any of the charter boats in Honokohau Harbor.
