HDS-7 Gen 2 transducer?

I plan on installing a new HDS-7 Gen 2 with transducer and I have a question on installing the transducer! Reading the West Marine advisor it says that the transducer cable should not be close to any other cable so as to reduce interference with the signal. I only have one cable chase from the stern to the helm and all my electrical cables run through it. Will I be OK with that, or do I need to shield the ducer cable, somehow? I have an older Garmin now and haven’t seen any problems!

I had the same issue and gave it a shot rather than try to finagle some other route to the console. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but I have an HDS-8 (not Gen II, but I don’t think it would make much difference) and my transducer cable runs in the same chase as everything else - no electrical interference as far as I can tell.

Electrical interference is only going to be an issue if you have fairly large alternating currents that can induce voltages in nearby wires - DC electrical systems can’t do that (yes, I’m sure there is still some ripple from the alternator, ignition systems, etc but unless you’ve got issues probably not enough to matter.) VHF antenna cables, maybe, at least when transmitting, and possibly speaker wires if you’ve got a bad@ss stereo. I would stay away from those if you can.

Would I prefer to route it separately? Yes. Does it really matter for most boats? Probably not. Your results may vary - just my experience!

I agree with Wolfie, I don’t think it will cause any problems. At least I’ve never seen it cause problems and I’ve installed a lot of them.

Thanks guys! I don’t need a lot of problems. Thats kind of what I thought! I get to reading all the stuff out there and start thinking aw-shtttt, what am I getting into now? There isn’t anything fancy running through there, so I’m just pulling one cable with the other.

Attach a piece of sturdy nylon chord to your new transducer and pull it through the piping and leave it in your console. This way if you ever need to pull another wire through and u don’t have an already existing wire you can use your chord… Just a suggestion!
