Headed to Charleston on 9/6!!! Suggestions??

Hey guys,
I’m headed down from cola to Charleston on the 6th to do some inshore fishing. I haven’t fished down there in probably 4 or 5 years. Have been doing a lot of striper fishing in cola using down lines with a 2/0 hook with a 2oz weight. I will probably be launching either at shem creek or somewhere nearby. Any suggestions on where to go, bait, or baits to use, setups, and any helpful info to get some nice reds and or trout. Really anything good to eat.

Thanks in advance guys,
Seth

Leave your boat at home. Book one of the guides on this site. Really.

Umm, ok. I actually went on a guide service down there almost 10 months ago. I have fished there many many times but after reading quite a few posts throughout the weeks seems that the fishing has changed a little. That the reds weren’t taking many minnows, which I had previously used. Was just seeing if anybody had a recent updates on where/what they were hitting thats all.

Thanks

I know this advice sounds mean but its not. He is trying to save you from a lot of disappointment and headache. Even if someone gave up their honey hole to you, its a slim chance you will be there at the right time and tide.

The fish in shem creek have seen it all. It will take high voltage or explosives to be productive there. I fish a friend’s dock up the ICW across from Bulls bay. You might pluck a red out between the 2-3 hour on a rising tide. Extremely picky.

If you want to catch fish and have some fun, fish the south jetty or the grillage. My son plucked a nice slot red out of there last weekend and I caught a nice spadefish. Lots of junk fish like runt BSB and toadfish though.

It did sound a little harse but its ok. Guides are def the way to go, but since going out with the guide I have been itching to give it a go for myself. Definitely not wanting anybodies honey holes just some tips/ advice. Maybe some local info of where they have been hitting or haven’t. I have fished quite a bit on the Wando but seems it is not producing lately. I think I will give that a try and another one of my spots that I used to fish a few years ago. Thanks guys I appreciate anything I’m given.

I would definitely put in at Remley’s point, less crowded and more parking. Plus its right on the wando and its a short run to the jetties.

Thats exactly where I am going to put in, I couldn’t remember the name! I have launched there quite a few times seemed to be easier than other places I have.

As for fishing tips, look up Too Busy’s tech tips on this site and you can learn a whole lot in a hurry. Also look at Google earth to narrow down some spots before you go and buy a map like the top spot map for the Charleston area. A little research goes a long way. Also just spend a day riding around to find some fish. Catch all of your bait in a castnet and move if you don’t get a bite in 20 minutes.

I did not mean it harsh. You’ll save the hassle of towing your rig. You’ll save the time it takes to prospect for feeding fish. Gas. I could go on.

That is true, not towing my rig would definitely be a lot easier, just figured I would give it a try on my own and see how I do. I have two livewells on my boat and was thinking of trying some live shrimp and some mud minnows. I’m not the greatest at a cast net so will probably pick some up from Haddrells just in case. Only staying in one spot for 20 min, that is for sure my worst problem, I have the hardest time with that especially if I get a nibble at a certain location.

If it was me, I would pick up some bait from Haddrels in Mt. Pleasant, or bring a cast net. Launch an Remlys point on a low tide and fish any of the creek mouths or docks from the boat landing heading up river. You obviously have a boat and gear and it’s not like you are driving from the country of Columbia.

As far as the technique and stuff, I have had a lot of luck this year with z-man lures, gulp products, and DOA shrimp. I don’t use much weight at all (most of the time no weight at all) and bump the bottom.

Have fun and good luck.

Thanks so much guys! Yall sure have some great info, wish I lived closer so I could be fishing out there every weekend!

Buy or catch some blue crabs and head to the Grillage, if it ain’t too rough. One of my buds has been catching redfish and big black drum there.

Where is the Grillage? I have done a lot of creek fishing on my brothers boat but never headed out towards the jetties or anything so it should be a good time to give something different a try.

Slowly getting ready for the trip. Gonna pick up some mud minnows and head out hopefully around 7 or so. Gonna head out of either remleys or shem creek. Whichever looks best that morning, run out try and get some bait, then hit some creek mouths. Will update once back in town. Thanks again guys!

Well what a trip. Got into charleston around 630, launched from shem, picked up some bait and headed towards the Wando. The reds seemed to be biting almost all day. They were definitely not picky but preferred shrimp for sure. After fishing a few hours had numerous fish caught and released and 3 nice ones around 22". Was really nice to get back down to charleston. Already planning another trip in a few weeks to head down again. Thanks again guys for all the great info.

Nice to get an After Action Report (AAR) to see that the advice worked and you got your fish! Congrats.
