This will be my first time on these waters. Spent the past 5 years in VA fishing the tidal James but see this as a bit more of a challenge since the tides are a bit more pronounced. I have planned accordingly but am curious about leaders when fishing here. A must have or not necessarily? I’ve already rigged my main rods with flourocarbon leaders but was wondering if it made a difference. I’ve always fished straight on (tied to jig) so this is a new thing. Any insight is appreciated. Friday I plan to go out with the Mrs. and we’re gonna try our hand together but I’m heading out tomorrow or Thursday solo. Any close launches to Mt. Pleasant without major parking issues?
There are several public places in Mt. Pleasant with ample parking to launch a yak. What area are you looking to fish or paddle? There is Remley’s point for the Wando or harbor area. The current can be a bit brisk through there so pick your times wisely. Shem Creek is a where I took my wife for her first paddle. It’s easy to get in and out, current isnt bad and plenty of scenery and creeks to fish/explore.
I don’t generally use leaders to fish for trout or reds. I just tie a loop knot to the lure when fishing artificials. Or, pick up an already made carolina rig for a buck or two for other bait. If it’s toothy critters you’re after than it would probably be a good idea.
