Heading to Southport next weekend

Next weekend we’re trying to prefish for the king tourney in October. Anyone ever fished for kings up that way? We have an idea of where we want to chase kings but are curious about the bait situation because we have never been to the area. Should we be fine sabikiing menhaden and blue runners at the near shore reefs or move around to more naturally occurring live bottom? How about the shipping channel buoy? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Typically, the pogies are found on the west end of Oak Island. You can run out of the Western Bar Channel (unmarked channel that hugs the beach around Caswell Beach). Look between the lighthouse and the first pier. There is a group of grey condos. They usually school up near those condos. They will usually be within 200 yard of the beach.

The “old sea buoy” has an area of rocky bottom that holds bait and Kings in the fall. They dredged a new channel 15+ years ago (more to the West) and removed all of the buoys from the original channel. You will want to fish the old channel in the old sea buoy area.

If you run that same heading, there is a long line of rocks: Light house rocks, 15 mile rocks, 18 mile rocks, shark hole, etc.

Asaltweapon,
I couldn’t have asked for a better reply to this question. I was thinking that no one would answer me there for a minute but thanks so much. We are heading up Friday I will be sure and post a report if we do any good. Thanks again for the help!
