Heads on or off

Do you think you end up with more shrimp if you keep a 29 quart cooler of headed shrimp versus 48 cooler full of heads on shrimp? I guess it would depend on the size of the shrimp, but have any of you measured the difference?

I have been shrimping since the late 70’s. I have found over the years that a full 48 quart cooler yields 28 to 30 quarts of headed shrimp. Varies with size. A lot of large shrimp → 28, mostly small → 30. A good nix → 29. The boys at DNR have done their research.

Thanks Carolinagrandpa, that’s what I figured. Someone told me that you end up with more in the 29 quart cooler and I haven’t ever taken the time to check. Hopefully I can get a cooler full this weekend and I will post my findings.

Boy, that would be a great puzzle to solve. I wouldn’t know, seeing as how I cannot seem to fill a cooler…

a pound of lead, a pound of feathers and a pound of shrimp all weight the same. same way as 29 qts headed or 48 qts head on. i have tried both ways. seems to always come out about the same.

Government isn’t stupid all the time. Why do you think they picked 29 qts head off?

29 quart Ziplock bags filled until you can just barely close them is more.

blanket brings up another enigma…researched how much a cooler (48qts) should weigh, most responses around 50 lbs. So basically that means a lb of shrimp in one qt. Yet I know that when I put shrimp in a qt bag, it is significantly more than 1 lb…can anyone shed some light on this as well?

I have found that a once you head a 48 quart cooler full of shrimp you end up with about 32 pounds of tails. In this case, you should have a little more than a pound of shrimp per quart.

the ratio of shrimp to heads is approx 60% . for instance if you buy 50# of shrimp heads on you will reap approx 30# of shrimp headed which is a 60/40 split

A 48qt. cooler has about 70# of heads on shrimp. I freeze my shrimp in the quart containers like you get when you buy soup at a take out restaurant. A quart of shrimp in one of these containers averages 1.5 pounds. Hope this helps.
