help 101

ok i need some basic help…a buddy invited me to go out on his boat friday to do some fishing before opening day of gator season. he has a nice boat and all the tools, but stinks at fishing. he likes fishing the jetties for whatever reason so my question what would be some of the rigs to use off the jetties? i fish freshwater a lot, just not the salt so any help would be appreciaed so i can outfish him!

carolina rigged with live shrimp fished as close to the rocks as you can, take plenty of rigs, if you are not losing some, you are not close enough… jetties are home to many species of fish, all of them eat shrimp

If the catching is slow, try small peeled chunks of shrimp. You’ll catch a bunch of small stuff, but the action should be pretty good. If you want large, use half or quarter crabs and big circle hooks. The nice thing about the jetties is that you never know what you might catch.

how much weight should i plan on using with a carolina rig?. i know conditions will plan a role in that but how much is good to start wiith

I agree with above but I also take squid. If you are in a mess of blackfish the piece of squid will hold up to many fish. Shrimp are 1 per fish. I like 1oz sinkers on my Carolina rigs. Also, take some smaller hooks, like #2 circles. I caught some spades out there on #2’s with clam strips. If you can get in close, sheeps hang out there too.

If you catch a junk fish, chunk it up and put it on a big hook and throw it out by the channel side. Sharks frequent the area.
