Now, actually anchoring the boat is not the problem. The plow anchor sets super-fast and I’ve yet to lose traction with it.
The problem is in the rear of the boat. My lake has some weird currents and when mixed with a little wind, it’s very hard to bottom fish and stay put.
Does anyone think that a little mushroom anchor would keep the boat from drifting back and forth? The currents aren’t strong, and I’m not talking about strong wind; I just want to quit the side-to-side drift.
The bottom is usually mushy “puff-mud”, so I think a free-falling mushroom may sink far enough into the mud and get enough suction to hold steady.
You didn’t say specifically. Are you asking if you can tie the mushroom anchor to the stern? I see you have a full height transom but, tying an anchor to the stern is ALWAYS dangerous. Be safe.
Silver, Heck of a nice ride you will enjoy it. Let us know when you’re going to get it salted down. You need to keep a pull out line with a small bouy attached to the plow because sooner or later it’s going to hang. A small rear anchor will keep it from turning. Mushroom is OK in the lake but will not do any good in ocean. Give me a call when you and the misses want to overnight on the ICW.
i think you will need more than a mushroom anchor. a might mite type reef anchor might work a bit closer to the stern but to really keep the boat steady i believe one has to use the two anchors at an angle. i just havent had much luck with the mushroom off the stern myself. so sometimes one can drop the reef anchor and not go to far away from it and it will hold.
I usually found the side-to-side action comes w/ ‘V’ hulls vs flat bottom boats, plus current/winds of that particular day.
For your 2nd anchor, usually the wind/current hits more on one side of the boat, so then anchor off the rear or side that faces the wind (anchor into the wind/current) then the forces should pull the lines taught and hold fairly steady.
Bigger – nah, I’ve actually got a Delta plow that’s galvanized; it’s not that shiney!
Scoutin’ – I’ll get to that sometime soon. I keep a camera in my drybox, but I’ve yet to use it whilest I’m out.
Ed – so that’s what that little hole is near the front of the anchor. I honestly didn’t know what that was, but it makes PERFECT SENSE now. I’m lookin’ forward to the ICW and I REALLY want to do a trip from G’town down to Chucktown. Maybe late OCT or early NOV…
I’m thinking about using another anchor off the stern and just tossing out extra line in the front and pulling it tight to set both ends. I think in the end, that’ll allow for the least lateral movement.
It depends on the water conditions, but on my bay boat, I used to use the main anchor in the front, then two of the fold away anchors in the back (one on each side). You can’t get much more stable than that. Just keep an eye on the currents and tides, and adjust them as necessary.
I always liked the fold away anchors because they take up less space. I got two square buckets from lowes (the ones that they sell the chain by foot in) and kept a rope and anchor in each corner.
