New to rifle hunting, mainly did archery. My 17 yo son is dying to shoot his 1st deer . We leased some property in Walterboro and have seen deer. I taught him all the fundamentals on preparing yourself for hunt like scent free clothing , bathing, etc. Have 12 gauge and 30/30. Unfortunately deer in the 200 plus range, no shot. Bought him a Remington 270 with factory scope. I’m looking for someone with more expertise to bore sight and sight gun? I’m more than willing to pay for help? Heck we can all use a little cash and figured this might be fun for someone to do? I live in mt pleasant … Thanks
Practice.
A 270 will shoot two hundred yards pretty consistently. Technique is the most important thing here.

Practice. Practice and the practice more. Start off shotting at a target 25 yards out. Sight it in the push it to 100 and resight. No way would i shot at a deer that someone else sighted in. Remember that the vitals are around the size of a 8" plate. If you can keep the shots within 2" push it out to 200. untill you can keep groups within 4" at 200 then dont take the shot.

Nobody should sight in the rifle except for the person using it. The point of aim and impact will not be the same between different people. Let him get it right for him.

I would be happy to help you bore sight but I live in Columbia so that is not really convenient for you. Take the rifle to the range and put it on a good rest. Put a target up at 25 or 50 yards and pull the bolt out of the rifle. Look down the barrel and center the view down the barrel in the center of the targt. Look through your scope and adjust the crosshairs to the target. You should be on paper and then you can move your target back and adjust to get sighted in. Remember that when you are adjusting the scope you are moving the point of impact. Feel free to pm me if you have any additional questions.

Thanks for the advice… That really helps…hopefully with a better rifle he will get a good in range shot? What do you think max range he can do with a 270 with much practice? Thanks again
If it is a bolt action rifle, remove the bolt so you can look through the barrel. Place the gun on a sturdy surface and prevent it from moving, a gun vise would be sufficient for this. Look down the barrel, find a stationary object about 25-30 yards away and move the rifle to have this object centered in your view when looking down the barrel. Now, without moving the rifle, adjust your scope to where the crosshairs line up on the same object. This should get you close enough to be on paper, now stack up some ammo and start zeroing it in. You should sight it in for a 100 yard shot. Like others have said, the one shooting the rifle should be the one sighting it in. Good Luck, let us know if you have any further questions.
A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.
Bore sighting only gets you close to where you want to hit, you still have to zero the scope after bore sighting. Sight in the scope 2 inches high at 100 yards ( so the bullets impact 2 inches above where you are actually aiming ) which will zero your scope around 250 yards. The 270 will kill deer as far out as the shooter is capable of making a shot.
If you have time during the week I will be glad to help and show you and the young man how to site in his rifle. I have a bore site and as the others have said , it Only gets you on paper. The actual results will also change with the different ammo. We are nearing Prime Rut time so don’t wait too long. Send a PM if still want help
I sight all my rifles (270,30-06,7mm, 308, etc) an inch and a half high at 100 yds. This will allow you to hold on shoulder until around 300 yds. Anything past that and you have to start using Kentucky windage.
I killed a doe last weekend and saw several bucks at the processor that looked like they had started to rut. With this cold front last night things should start getting good in the next few weeks.

Some of y’all should really look into the ballistics of your guns.
The bolt/bore method is the easiest to use and do. If you can take it to a shop and use a columnuator on it, you can just start at 100yds since you will more than likely be on paper already. Either way will work and can be done with a minimal use of ammo. If you are taking most kill shots at 200yds, sight in for 200yds. If you are taking shots a majority of the time at 100yds, sight in for 100yds. Shoot the rifle at various ranges to know what the rifle is doing. Many times a rifle that will put a 1" group down at 100yds won’t translate into further ranges. Also look up the ballistics of the cartridge and bullet you are using. Stay with the same cartridge and buy multiple boxes of that cartridge within the same lot. Minute changes in powder chemistry will result in different ballistics in the gun.
The only person who can set the rifle up is the person shooting it.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Some of us do.
59 grains H-4350, 110 grain bullet ( BC 0.323 ) 3430 FPS, +2 @ 100 = -3 @ 300.
55 grains H-4350, 130 grain bullet ( BC 0.380 ) 3133 FPS, +2.5 @ 100 = -4 @ 300.

Good on you, most people have zero idea of what a bullet will do at various ranges beyond their sight in.
I run a 150grn Nosler BT over 45.5grn H4350 in the 7mm08 @ 2700fps with a .417 BC set .020" off the lands.

I keep a little laminated card in the stock pack for a quick reference if needed. Though I won’t take a shot at anything over 200 without a good rest in most instances.

Get a bench rest set up with a front rest and a separate rear bag. This allows some movement and make you work a little at your shooting skills until you progress to prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions. You may also want to find a .22 so that he can practice form, sight picture and trigger squeeze.
Midway, Natchez, Midsouth etc have rests that don’t cost and arm and a leg. Led Sleds and those vices don’t allow the shooter to practice any muscle memory.

Well guys, went to twin ponds today .Not a successful day. I’m wondering if there is a issue with factory made scope that came with gun, Was able to get on paper at 25yds. Unable to get on bullseye? With adjustments grouping 4" high and 4" to right? Tried three shots at 100yards and not even on 12"x12" paper? Went thru box and half of shells with unsatisfactory results. Any more advice? Take back to gander mountain? Thanks guys
After 4 shots you need to let the barrel cool off for a while. You will lose consistency if you just keep on shooting after that. I sight the rifle in at 50 yards first with a brand new scope and then fine tune it for 100.
I have to give gander mountain props. They returned a crappy gun with full refund which I used to get a savage 270 and American ruger 308.also got upgraded scopes. Thanks for all the advice fellas
