help catching cobia

I have seen them around the reefs several times but never targeted them. Anyone got tips on how to catch these rascals . Would I have a shot sight casting on them with yo zuris or a spoon ?

grab the gaff and another cold beer

Chum one in and just gaff it.

That’s dirty haha, they get that close ??

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

Haha, they’ll get that close. You just better be (**()ed lucky with the box open and someone ready to slam it shut or you better be prepared to buy a new gaff and possibly be given free swimming lessons compliments of that same cobia…

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

I’ve free gaffed a few over the years, just be prepared…they will break all kinds of stuff. I like to pitch some fresh live bait to them: pogy, sardine, mullett, crab, eel, whiting, squid, cigar, greenie, sea bass, illegal alien, chiuhauh…you get the point. Curly tail jigs, flies, big plugs, poppers, diving lures, cut dead bait, snatch hooks, sometimes you have to get creative. At times they will eat it all, sometimes not. Be flexible or be ready with another dinner plan.
