So i didn’t take a picture (wanted to get it back in water ASAP), but caught a fish today i thought was a 10” red, but when i held it to pull the hook out, i noticed the scales were sharper / coarser. There were three spots on its side, but they weren’t the distinguishable spots you see on a red but a bit fainter. I know a pic would make this easier but figured I’d try. I was fishing the Kiawah River close to Folly if that helps at all.
Caught 5 small reds, 1 ladyfish, 1 small shark, and 2 trout, one keeper trout and 1 keeper red. Threw them all back. Also lost what i think was a large overshot red but may have been a shark.
Fished the same spots yesterday at the same tide and caught 10-12 slot reds and 4-5 too small. No idea why they didn’t bite today but poor fishing in great weather still = Great Day.
I agree with you MK. I bet it was a croaker.Anyone remember those t-shirts that had croka no joka on the back?A local seafood company had them.Crosby’s maybe?
I was right near the big oyster point that sticks out where the Stono and Kiawah meet on that side of the Kiawah River. Was trying to catch trout off the point but ended up finding reds and the mystery fish. Looking at pics online it looked just like a croaker by with 3 spots on its side - they were fainter spots than a red but definitely visible. You ever seen a croaker with spots?
Fished the Wando yesterday and caught 31 fish, about 25 of which were trout, 2 of which were 18-19” which was good to see. Caught a 27” red and lost another about the same size. Good to see a bunch of trout since haven’t caught but a few in the Kiawah.
