2006 60hp Mercury 2 stroke - I turn the key nothing, I turn the key nothing, at least 3 or 4 tries then turn the key and it will start right up. It seems like a bad connection at the key/ignition switch, but I’ve checked all connections and they all look good. It seems to get better as the day goes on, but from one weekend to the other it’s back to the same thing. I turn the switch and all the gauges move, but does not crank until 3 or 4 turns of the key.
Sounds like corroded contacts in the ignition switch. Below is the basic troubleshooting.
-
Do you hear the starter solenoid clicking?(if so skip to #3)
-
Check for power at the ignition switch wire to the solenoid when the key is turned. If there is no power then it is most likely a faulty ignition switch.
-
If there is power coming from the signal wire but no actuation from the solenoid then it is a faulty solenoid.
-
If the solenoid is clicking, but starter is not turning, check for power at the starter.
-
If no power at the starter than it is a faulty solenoid. If there is power at the starter but the starter is not turning then it is most likely a faulty starter.

-1. Remove and clean all battery cables/connection to bright metal and re-attach.
-0. Remove battery, charge it on known good charging system and have it load tested. Or, replace with known good and charged battery.
Pick up with #1, above.
