Im new to the forum and have a question. I have been doing king fishing for a while now. I just got into going further for dolphin wahoo and tuna but while trolling caught this fish. I think its a type of snapper if my research is right. Let me know if im wrong.

Thank you. yes i did notice the worms but for some reason one of the guys thought it was a snapper. Looked up pictures of jacks on web and found none that looked like it.From now on i will know.
im sure you didnt come into fishing knowing what every fish was. i only asked for some help.
OK, TryinReelHard. I guess you’re for real. Don’t take offense. I didn’t mean to zap you. I thought you might be one of the “funny” guys playing a prank. You just never know when one of those “funny” guys will be tryin to pull yer leg on one of these posts just fer kicks.
I’ve always heard all my life about the worms, so I never kept those turds; but I also heard all my life that they serve AJ’s for dinner in restaurants in FL. Many years ago, I was finally convinced to cut one open to see for myself for sure. You see, I took some guys who spent a good bit of time down in Florida, and they swore by it. Well, so, I cut one of those donkeys up one day, only to be grossed out by the cheese-wiz-lookin’ worms runnin’ all through the meant. Won’t do that again.
I think maybe it’s the really small ones they eat down in FL. The one I cut open way back when was 62 lbs.

No wasnt joking like the others might. Had to learn somehow. just having to teach myself. Noone else to show me that i know atleast. The worms were disquisting but next time i will know to cut it loose. anyway to prevent from catching those in future or what i could do diffrently?
If I knew how to NOT catch them while trolling, I’d be selling that idea.
Nothing stinks like when you think you have 5 gamefish (wahoo/tuna/dolphin) on for a second or two and it turns out to be amberjacks. You can get into them sometimes really thick and they’ll waste your time and bait. That’s what I meant by bait wasters. No offense by that either. You can’t help it if they attack your spread. Don’t worry about the other stuff either. I like to meet new folks and take them fishing. Your questions are fine and valid for any new offshore fisherman. You’ll find that lots of folks here are eager to help out anyone with sincere questios. We can be a little gun shy, though, from past pranking. Welcome to the site.

hey bro, beneath that mass of worms it sort of looks like a bonita… if it was you would have known it when the knife hit it, very, very bloody… not exactly table fare…
Tryin Reel Hard,
He’s talking about those two little tunnies under the amberjack. They are basically vampire food, but you can cut strips off of them and use them instead of ballyhoo. That’s an old trick that I don’t know if anyone does anymore.

I just got back from Venice, La and caught 3aj all over 60 lbs. The captain talked me into keeping them and when they hit the cleaning table I could not believe what I saw. Beautiful white, worm free meat! I have never cut into one in my life that did not have worms. We ate it that night and it was very similar to cobia in taste and texture. In other words, it was excellent. Cooked it for some friends this weekend and they reluctantly tried it, then devoured it. My question is, why do they get the worms here and not on the gulf coast?
I have no idea. I’ve heard people talking about eating it in FL for years, but ours are definitely filled with worms. Do they maybe have a different species?? Good question for a DNR researcher, I guess.

To the original poster. You need to learn about the fish or fish with someone who knows. There are limits and minimum lengths on many fish. In this case, ignorance is not an excuse. The resources are there. If you can not ID an AJ, you clearly have a lot to learn. I suggest you buddy up with some folks on this site and either fish with them or take them fishing.
Thanks,
Staff

I saw the same thing in Venice. The captain we were out with said he knew about the worms in the East coast AJ’s, but for some reason they were worm-free in that area of the Gulf. We musses have good worm-breeding conditions around here…

Tryin Reel Hard, I hear ya on your question. I could not identify that fish either…hint’s a new one to the big blue my self. What I can tell you thus far is that there seem to be a lot of people on here that are willing to help…ie…take you fishing, or go fishing with you, and or give or offer advice. I honestly think that most people on this website have your best interest at heart. Whether it is safety or “game” laws. I’ve been on this site for only a short while now and I’ve got offers from several people who are more than willing to show me the ropes. Just read what people are saying…you will learn who and what to take to heart. I’ve not met any of these guys yet, but they seem to be a genuinely good group of guys.

Appreciate the honesty. I agree with u mr. kracker about the limits and sizes. I just took a chance on this one. once the boat gets thru with servicing i wouldnt mind running with someone who knows the ropes a little more. I just have to find one of those people first. Thanks for the help. I wasnt eating anything with worms in it. Looked disquisting in my opinion.
I was told about the little tunnies and thought i would try that knowledge next time when i go. seems a little cheaper but didnt know how well it really would work.
