Help me plan a trip!

Been lurking here for about 2 years now and am ready to go offshore! No, I don’t have a boat or any experience really…but I will be booking a charter.
I am currently working as a contractor in Iraq and will be home on vacation in spring 2014, between April-June. Dont have an exact time yet. I want to take my son offshore, would I be better off booking a boat/Capt. out of Venice, La. or will the local fishing be picking back up then?
We would primarily be interested in mahi, tuna and grouper…what say the wise old salts on this esteemed forum?

Feel free to recommend specific boats and capt’s.!

Thanks a lot!

No need to run all the way to Venice. The fishing here will be strong that time of year with trolling for dolphin picking up steam. That time of year you won’t really need to spend all of the money for a sporty either if it is just you and your son. Put up a post in the forum when you know when you will be around and you will easily find a ride for both of you on a center console for only a few hundred dollars.

If you make the trip to Venice, try the Mexican Gulf Fishing Co.

How old and capable is your kid? We haven’t really seen any yellowfin tuna in Charleston in a while. People have been targeting the blackfins mostly. If you are going to Venice, you are probably going to be taking shots at the yellowins, and they have some good ones over there. If your son is a bit older, he might be okay strapped in on standup gear with a 80lb yellowfin, but if he is 10 years old, shooting for blackfins might be more manageable for him.

Thanks for all the replies! Skinneej, my boy is 13 now and growing like a sasquatch! Not worries about him hooking into an 80 lb+ tuna. Not that picky about what we catch really, but I would love a chance at a bull Mahi and some tuna!

The voices in my head said to go spend my money on fishin’ gear and blow off work!
