Help me tie up the proper lures for trolling

I’ve got a 35 luhrs express with twin (gas) engines. We have been out trolling about 4 or 5 times and done a lot of bottom fishing at comanche hole. We always catch fish, but I’m really new to the saltwater fishing. I’m in the Navy and from Colorado, a little different fishing where I’m from. We are taking a trip on the 27th to do some trolling, and then bottom fishing most likely. I’ve got decent poles and reels I think, but our tackle is hit or miss. It’s really just random things we’ve bought (2 other guys own the boat with me). I’d like to see if anyone would be interested in meeting me down on my boat one day or night and lending their expertise on how to tie up rigs, what to use, things like that. For your time I can offer some drinks while were there, some money, fishing trip, whatever you’d like. I just use this boat to take out friends, some navy guys, and we’ve lost a few big fish, I’d like to get a little more educated on what I’m doing. If anyone is interested, please let me know! I also own an electrical business, so if you need some help, we can trade that too. Thanks a lot guys.

I would like to help you out but don’t think my schedule will allow by the 27th. I suggest you go to the guys at charleston angler or haddrells they offer free seminars. If you can’t get someone to help you pm me and I will see what I can do. We are headed to Venice la to chase tuna this weekend!

That sounds great. I’ll check on them on tuesday. I really appreciate the response. Either way, hope you can get out and do some fishing with us! Good luck this weekend

Another option is you could go by Haddrells or Atlantic tackle both will gladly help you…

I never knew that. Thanks a lot guys. I’ve heard of Haddrells, I’m going to have to take my poles in there and see what we can come up with!

Where is the boat locate and where do you live? If you are willing to drive to summerville go to sellsfish seafood. Talk to the owner Paul. He is the man to talk to and is willing to help you out. He also has a section called fishing for dummies the is full of already pre tied sea witches and bottom rigs. In this section he has a pic of the fish above the rig that will catch that fish. You will learn way more and get better rigs than haddrells any day of the week and you don’t have to bring anything with you.

You can always look up Scouting 4 Goodies or sells fish on this site I am pretty sure they sell rigs already made.

Great advice as Sells is the man. I’m lazy, and it buy rigs from this company, www.eyecatcherlures.com . He has quality rigs. I have landed a 300 lb blue marlin on one.

Sells it is. Thanks guys. My boat is in the Charleston City Marina

Josh,
The luhrs is the bird dawg right? I ran that boat all summer last year for the owner. Text me at 843 582 1991. I’ll meet you one day and help you. Watch your fuel trolling… That beast loves gas. A lot of our spots and trips should still be in the garmins.

Yeah it is, thanks killin. I still had your number actually. We are heading out next thursday, interested? I’ll text you

I went into to Hadrells today for 4 hours. Brought 5 of my poles. It was a great experience. I got my reels restrung as needed, put power pro 80 pound braid on top of my bottom fishing reels, fixed a busted clasp on my penn 80W, they went through all my crap and helped me rig up a great set of lures, showed me how to put the ballyhoo on properly, it was a great experience! I can’t say enough nice things about this place. Literally I dumped a plastic storage box of a mess on his desk and he patiently showed me everything. I feel much better about my tackle now. Thanks to the brothers in there that helped me today! Thursday is going to be a blast…now if any of you can put me on some good trolling for tuna, wahoo, dolphin this time of year, that’d be great. We plan on trolling in the morning, and then bottom fishing on the way back, Comanche always brings quantity. What are some good trolling spots out there within 60-70 miles? Thanks guys. As I understand the trolling fish are deeper when it’s cold, and shallower when it’s warm? Bottom fish are opposite?

Told you, charleston has some of the best people in their tackle shops

That’s funny, we went and looked at this boat when it was for sale months back. Decided to hold of until next summer. If you still need help, I’ll be glad to show you what I know. Just give me a shout. I’m certainly not the best, but I’ve learned from the best.

Bottom rigs are pretty basic. Trolling rigs can get as complicated as your imagination will allow. Most newcomers think you need all these expensive fancy rigs to catch fish trolling, but the truth is that the simplest stuff works just as well. Of course everyone has their opinions on this . Seawitches and cedar plugs catch plenty!.

bonzo or sailfish, or both. Headed out early AM about 3:30. Got two spots open if you want to go? I do charge $150 for the group we have to pay for the gas, killin can confirm, she’s a gas hog lol. You guys let me know if you want to go. We’ll be trolling first, then bottom fishing on the way in or afternoon sometime. I’m looking for someone to set me on some good trolling spots for whats running right now? Don’t want to go all the way out to the gulf, but 50-65 miles would be good.
