Help Needed

Guys,
I live near Ballentine and the weather looks decent and I can go on Sunday. I moved hear a few years ago from the beach and have saltwater fished most my life and I am trying to figure these stripers out. I had a good friend who was very good at it and limited out the few times he took me but he was killed in an auto accident (Alan D.)a couple of years ago and I haven’t been since, I would love to put my 13 yr old son on a keeper. What and where should I do to have the best shot? Troll, buy live bait and drop? I really will appreciate any advise. Are they up this way or in the gap area?
Thanks
Rick

I was on fish in Ballentine a few weeks ago but they seem to have vanished the last two times. i think they moved up. I am going out tomorrow and will let you know how I do. I have been having trouble getting keepers. Sorry to hear about your friend.

I really appreciate that.
Thanks for the reply

we have been catching them on humps that raise up to about 30 feet dropping live bait and running planer boards more than likely will be out there next weekend as well. hope you get some!

You go inside the cage?
Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark’s in the water. Our shark.

What would the rig look like that I drop the herring down on?
I’m thinking an egg sinker above a swivel and then a couple of feet of flourocarbon with a typical live bait hook? Do you hook through the lips, nostrils or across dorsal fin? Also, do you let it lay on the bottom or do you count the “number of pulls” to fish on the depth finder. Thank you for the help. If I catch anything, I’ll post pics. How long do you give a hump before you move?

your right on with the rig, i tend to use the leader line of a less #test, i like to hook mine either through the lips, or just under the dorsal fin so that you don’t hit the spine and kill it. we spread our rods out, we have one about halfway down then our deepest is two cranks off the bottom and others spread inbetween. If your makering lots of fish on the hump then i would drift about over it for about 30 mins then move on. the best humps to look for are ones that come off extended points or in deep water coves. good luck

Rick a friend of Alan is a friend of mine. PM me if you want and I can try to put you on some fish. The fishing hasnt been as good as it was on The Noresman.

Thanks for the reply. I had to do the last minute family thing and didn’t make it out, plus it looked like the wind was howling. StriperKing82, I will PM you before my next chance to go. I am glad to see you knew Alan. I went a few times with him on the Mako and we slayed them. I haven’t been since, as I saltwater fish mostly, but I want to start learning the striper fishing and take advantage of the awesome lake we have right here. I want to desperately put my two boys on a few keepers. Thanks again.

Question,
How long a leader do you use from the swivel to the hook for live bait dropping and I have some 15lb (ultrathin) flourocarbon, would that be ok?

I do about 4’. 15# flourocarbon should be good. I use 10#, but most use heavier line than me.

ya i use 20# but you can easily get by with 15 or less, but like steelytom said anywhere from 3-4 should be good. I’m going out this weekend and will post a report on how it goes. Tight lines everyone
