Help please !!

My family and I are heading to iop next week. This will be the only time of year me or my boat see salt water. I use iop marina because house is very close to there. I don’t know enough about the jetties or boating in salt water to be comfortable going there. I just want to take my two young daughters, who live sharks, to an easy place close to catch some nice sharks. Two years ago we had success in the hole behind dewees catching 3-5foot spinner and black tips but that was earlier in the year and this time last year we struck out. Can someone recommend a good spot and bait/method for decent sized shark around iop. I am moderately comfortable in the harbor but don’t really know what to look for or what to try. Please help me!

I don’t shark but if you’re venturing out to jetties please be careful with those two young girls on board. Jetties can get nasty
real quick!!

When you see “Old Glory” waving in the breeze, know that it is the dying breaths of our fallen hero’s that makes it wave.

If you go to the jetties for the first time be carful. Those container ships displace a LOT of water. So keep a sharp knife close by if you need to cut an anchor rope. Grab you a nice brick and one of those $2 yellow 40’ ropes from wallyworld, after you tie the rope to the brick duct tape it incase it cracks when you throw it into the rocks at the jetties. Use your anchor to keep your stern opposite of the jetties. If the wind is up, go to the leeward side of the jetties so the boat wont rock you to death. Also I recommend going to the jetties for the first time at low tied so you get a better idea of where everything is. Good luck!

I don’t really want to go to the jetties. As I said I am not a very experienced boater and prefer to stay in the icw and possibly harbor.
Thanks

If you have sonar, look for deep holes. Typically where two large creeks converge.

Don't be afraid to try. Even if you don't want to anchor up, just putter around reading your sonar to get and getting use to the container ships going by. Once you got it figured out you wont have any troubles, I've taken and aluminum jon boat out there with no problems.

Look here’s the deal with the jetties, if you want sharks its a good option, if the winds are over 10 knots don’t go out, if they are under it’ll be flat. They would have a blast fishing the bottom out there. Look up dynamite hole and on an outgoing tide anchor up on the harbor side of the jetties so your fishing in the current. Throw on some cut bait and let it rip, you’ll need good weight to keep it down, but you’ll catch fish. If you see clouds that are ugly pack up and move inshore. Its very open and not dangerous if you stay vigilant. You’ll be on an outgoing tide so the rocks will be visible also. If you are absolutely against jetties, go to the big red bouy in front of Sullivan’s, its right outside the ICW. That’s an artificial reef that holds sharks, black sea bass, and reds at the least. Im sure there is plenty lurking down there. Good luck

Boyd,
Take a quick trip to Capers. Use some cut bait on the bottom. There are plenty of sharks. You might even see a tarpon or two out there.
