Help Salvage Vacation...Motor overheat

Rented house with dock at edisto and planned to go offshore this week. Launched boat and parked truck. On return to boat that had been left idling the engine alarm was going off with apparent overheat. Yes the engine was in the water and water was streaming from the “pee hole”. Boat had been out 3-4 weeks ago and ran fine. Turned off several times and restarted but within 2-3 min would overheat espcially with any RPM’s. Place boat back on trailer cussed and left. Back home with earmuffs on engine the water is extremely hot coming from the engine. Otherwise engine runs fine. Any ideas on something i may try since most boatshops are backlogged. I would assume that water pump is working since water streams from the “peehole”. Could I have sucked up debris at landing? Engine is 2005 Yamaha F225 4 stroke.
Thanks in advance.

I’ve heard good things about Chris v and had planned on using him since the outboard shop closed. I was hoping for an easy fix like a clogged T-valve or poppet valve but I can’t locate either on this engine.

im a car mechanic not a boat mechanic but I wonder if your thermostat is stuck closed. is the engine really overheating or is the coolant temp sensor bad? hopefully chris will chime in he knows his sh&%^&. I know cars pretty well but I dont know how cooling systems on boats work therefore I cant be much help .

sounds like a waterpump
if it only overheats at idle, then the bypass valve is usually stuck, but that doesnt sound likeyour problem

have you ever had the pump replaced?

if you get me the tomorrow/ wednesday morning, I will fix it and have it ready by lunch time. standard price $229 plus the pump
I know what its like to go on vacation and have your boat break.

I was on Captive on fathersday one year, and had an issue, and the local guy went and got me what I needed. made for a much better vacation

I’m now at Charleston MARINE LLC

Scout 23 - I had the exact same problem on my 05 Yammi 225 4 stroke. Motor was peeing but felt really warm. Water pump was toast. My mechanic here in Columbia told me I had caused it by running the motor with muffs only. I had never heard that and the 225 manual says it is OK but he told me to either use the hose connection or run it in a barrel. I have used Charelston Marine for my other boats and have always been very satisfied. Best of luck and hope the rest of your Edisto vacation goes well.
I have rented several Edisto houses with docks in the past. Which one you at?

You start a new post instead of resurrecting one that’s almost three years old. You’ll get more responses for your specific question that way.

I was about to chime in that the OP may run into other problems trying to go offshore this week as sporty as the forecast is looking, but I can’t remember what it was like offshore in June 5 '07.

I have ox66, so not sure how hard it is to get to thermostats on Four stroke. Shouldn’t hurt anything to remove them for a weekend. I had one stick last summer and removed both. They open at 118 degrees on ox66, so when the summer water temp is 70+ I would imagine after traveling the length of the foot passing exhaust, and entering the block it wouldn’t take long to pick up temp close to the opening temp of thermostat.

I’m not suggesting this. Just a tail of how things worked for me. After several springs in a row having one yr old thermostats stick shut, I pulled them and never put them back. Swapped to spark plugs designed to run cooler and have had no problems. No danger of toasting a motor because of a $25 part. And, yes, she gets hooked up to the hose and flushed well after every trip…thermostats should have lasted longer.

Never heard of muffs causing impellars to go bad, but ‘dry’ cranking them is a NO NO!

if you are not running t-stats you are introducing another problem. carbon buildup from running too cool can stick a ring. the engineers designed them into the engine for a reason. stay on top of your anti-carbon treatments.

speaking of the rings; where can i buy ringfree? i have been told to run that with my fuel.
