Go to West Marine and buy hydraulic steering fluid; open the little screw on the top of of the steering column and pour the steering fluid into it slowly until it’s full. Turn the wheel all the way left and right while filling. Keep going until it’s full. Pause as needed for it to settle. Check for leaks in the hydraulic path after filling to make sure you didn’t have a leak.

You probably don’t have a leak (not of any consequence, anyway). You just have to add fluid occasionally, just like with most any fluid system. If you do have a leak, though, it could be anywhere in the hydraulic path, from the helm to the motor (assuming its the same setup I have on my Scout). Make sure your boat is dry when you start, and look for wetness (hydraulic fluid spill) along the hydraulic path (the hoses and fittings, and the steering helm itself) after you fill the resovoir. You probably just need to add fluid from normal usage and depletion, though.

Godspeed. I hope that’s all it is (low fluid).

if you need to add fluid to a steering system, you must have a leak. it is a sealed system.
most common places to leak, are the ram at the engine, and the seal under the steering wheel.

Chris, can these systems leak slowly enough that you don’t/can’t really see it anywhere, but lose fluid over time, as opposed to having a leak that is noticable? That’s what I’ve always thought. My 04 Scout never had signs of a leak, but the steering went out fairly rapidly a few years after I bought it, so I added fluid (it was low), and that solved the problem. It’s been about a year now, and it’s still fine. So, I figured that maybe some of them leak a tiny, tiny bit along and along, making it necessary to add fluid on occasion. Does that make sense?
