Help with a shift/throttle remote

Here’s the whole story -

I’m retoring a 1977 Century Arabian runabout. I’m literally in the homestretch and I found I could not start the motor fter about a year down (heck, I’ve taken this thing all the way to the stringers - new floor, new upholstery, new dash, new paint).

I traced the elec problem to the ignition switch in the throttle remote. I had access to a replacement remote (similar Teleflex model) and so I swapped them.

The remote is a side panel remote, so you have to take off the handle to mount it on the outside of the panel, while the mechanism is hidden behind the panel. Putting the handle back on, now the “throttle only” button will not depress. It snaps in, looks OK, but will not go in.

Funny… the same thng happened when I was working with the original one - I took the handle off, installed it on the boat, put the handle back on and the “throttle only” button will not depress.

Here is a diagram of the remote: http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/2436/10.cfm

Anyone have this problem and know the right way to do it - obviously I am dong something wrong…

I have the hardest time with that style control box.
I wish I had an easy internet fix, but unfortunately, thats one of those things that requires hands on for me, maybe someone else can offer some info.
Spareparts from here, is great with stern drives, and that box is very common on the sterndrives, he may be helpful

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

Those old Arabians are classics would love to see some pictures.

Thanks Chris V.

I went by Charleston Marine to see the Oracle myself. “Maybe the panel you are mounting to is too thin.” He was right. A couple washers behind the wall on the mounting bolts did the trick.

Now to get the thing running.

Blue Angels in the harbor in a couple weeks. I’d like to have the old boat out there.
